I am in the market for a Jackhammer shovel.  Landscaping business is going bonkers and one of these would pay for itself in one job.  Does anyone have a brand or know what to look for when buying one?  I am after an electrical one and have seen them for around $150.00 range.

I always thought they were much more expensive.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I would not buy a $150 one. I did (mine was a little more) and it broke within a few weeks. Since I did not want to drop $800 or more on a good one, I just rent if need be. Point being, if it is for landscape, get the upper end ones with a good warranty.

No doubt about it! Get a good one. The ground here in So Cal can be harder than concrete. I am lucky to be in construction and use the one we have at work. It is a bit heavy but would not even think about digging without it. Plus it'll put some hair on your chest. Mike

What in the heck is a jackhammer shovel?  I've never heard of one, but sounds like I could use one. Does anyone have a picture of one?

Dick,

I have seen them called power spades out here.  You should be able to rent one at US Rentals or possibly Home Depot.  Basicly a jackhammer with a spade tip.  I need to rent one to move a volunteer Washingtonia that is growing in a rocky area here.

I recognize those guys, but I don't recognize where they are.

That explains why nothing's getting done around here.

We call them 'breakers.' You can put a spade bit on the end and dig through anything. A 30 pound unit will work marginally well, while a 60 pounder will dig to China, but it does get heavy after a while.

They rent for about $40 a day, sell new for about $1,500 and used for around $700.

NO KIDDING. I COULD ONLY TAKE ABOUT 30-40MIN OF IT. NOW I SIT IN THE TRACTOR WITH THE AC ON, A COLD BEVERAGE AND A CD PLAYING.

MOIL POINT IS WHAT IT'S CALLED, IT IS JUST A POINTED END INSTEAD OF A CHISEL.

Jeff,

Check out Harbor Freight Tool. Don't know if there is a store located in Orange country. The closest one to you in S.D. county is in Escondido. They sell a 60# electric jackhammer with two different blades for $400. I bought one two years ago when I had to cut through rocks & clay in order to put up my block walls. It paid for itself in saved rental charges. It cuts through clay like buttah.
