Big Box Store Finds 2022

That's some expensive dirt!  Local big boxes do the same.  I guess they're counting on people not checking and assuming "bigger is always better".

The one they had in stock was probably 50% bigger.  Real nice fat trunk on it.  So tempting...

Found this butia at Home Depot in Greensboro NC today for 20 bucks.  Never seen them at big box stores around here before.

Fill up on your Washingtonias. Home Depot Waco. The Home Depots typically have better (Filifera) hybrids than Lowes. 20 years ago I’d buy.

My Lowes had quite a large selection last week. There was a massive amount of Phoenix roebelenii, but in those were some hidden gems. Those hidden gems were Phoenix sylvestris and Trachycarpus fortuneii. Of course there was some small and large queens, some large Chamaedorea seifrizii, but they have had these before of the same size. To my surprise, they also had a couple of cycads to choose from. Of course there was the typical sago but they also had plenty of coonties there as well. They also had the indoor stuff like cats and majesties.

Well you know how it goes.

I can resist anything except temptation.  And I'm supposed to be downsizing my palm inventory...

This one jumped out at me.

What is it? ("Palm" is as far as I  got.) It's not a coconut, is it?

Why are you supposed to be downsizing your palm inventory? What brand of madness is this? Is this a self-imposed edict?

It is a coconut.  I know, I know.  Want outweighed common sense.

I'm probably moving (to the opposite coast) next summer so I'll only be able to bring the bare minimum... which I think I've cut the list down to about 50 potted palms at this point.  Plus a bunch of seedlings I'll be able to bare-root so those will be easy logistically easier to shove into the back of my suburban....

I was just about to say before I saw you got one, you can't go wrong with owning a coconut, very fun to take care of and very easy and the fact it has the coconuty leaves you can't beat it 🥳Looks awesome! 😍

I've never considered one after hearing Banana Joe Clemente talk about how poorly they've done for him.  They were my favorite palm when I first got the palm bug but I started disliking them, there are so many other palms that look so much better.  However, this one really looked great at Lowes.  @ZPalmsif everything goes as planned I'll be right down the road from you next year.  Looking forward to the ease of access to Sabals on the east coast.

The Green Malayan has been very easy for me. It is one of my most carefree tropicals when it comes to care, even indoors. It's very easy to work with. I'm guessing yours is also a Green Malayan since I heard they are the most commonly sold. Even if the temperature falls to 62F for a short period at night and it gets a lot of heat during the day, it still does great.

I usually go by the rule that if I think it's too chilly, then the coconut probably thinks so too. I never let it sit out if it reaches 59F. I'm sure the small temperature difference doesn't matter but I don't take the chance because I still want it to look decent. I think temperature is most important over anything else, and indoors, having 0 drafts indoors helps as well, and even low humidity isn't too much of an issue, but I think it's good to have a fair amount! Just a couple things I've noticed and learned while having one when the temperature starts to drop, Help this kinda helps to keep your coconut looking decent. 😋

Where are you heading? Are you coming back to North Carolina?

Years ago the Walmart in Ottawa, Illinois had beautiful blue European fan palms. Unfortunately I've never seen anything like that again. They were really cheap too iirc.

Edit: I saw someone mention blue pots a few pages back, that's what they were.

Occasionally there is a good find at the BB stores. I'm happy with whatever this Butia variety is (didn't know there were different types until joining this group). Found 3 years ago at a Nashville area Orange Depot on my way way back from down south. It was a good size palm then and was 25 buckaroos. For scale, the pot it's shown in is 24" dia. at the rim.

Nice Butia!  Does it always stay indoors or just in winter?  This seems to be a palm that does well in a container but not sure about it being indoors more than a couple of months.

This one (I'm in central Indiana) goes indoors usually in November and back outside mid April. I've got another Butia that I've had from seedling stage that is in a similar pot but looks much different. The 2nd one is bigger, taller fronds that are more upright and more open and airy looking.

Thanks for the tip.  I stopped by HGC today and grabbed this queen for $30.  It's at least 10' tall.  Going to keep it propped up against this Myrtle for a few weeks to make sure there's no more freezes coming before I plant.

My local Lowe's had the whole shebang this weekend! They had Queens 2.25 gal and 6.5 gal, Pygmy Dates 2.25 gal and two other much larger sizes, Majesties ranging from small doubles and triples to large singles and doubles, W Robusta 2.25 gal, T Fortunei 2.25 gal, Bamboo palms of large sizes only, and then some medium size foxtails (unsure of pot size). In addition to all these palms, they also had small cavendish bananas for $22 but i ended up getting it for $10 on Presidents Day. They had a few types of hibiscus, some Hawaiian Ti, and some other tropicals. I was stunned by their selection of cacti and various succulents, ive never seen so much at this location before so it was quite a stress relieving trip just browsing plants!

The only things that i have NEVER seen at my local Lowes and Home Depot is Coconut, Christmas, and Bottle palms. I have however seen all three of these at Walmart though and they sell quickly.

EDIT: I also saw some very large C. humilis in blue pots, which is something ive never seen before. They were quite expensive though.

I randomly stumbled upon a bottle palm about two years ago now, and grabbed it (decent size too, probably 10G) at the time.... it's in my family room, and slowly putting out a frond at a time, while only keeping three fronds at once.  They are very cool though and glad I grabbed it.  if only I could grow it outside but alas... lol

Last year in Home Depot, I found these huge foxtail palms around 8ft tall for like 150 to 200 bucks or something. They were pretty nice, and they even had those large pots with like 4 foot tall palms and like a bunch of flowers covering them. They were beautiful, but they costed about 420 bucks.   They also had a couple pygmys, sagos, and an occasional crappy looking fan palm or something. Not too shabby for a Chicago Home Depot.

Ours have Leyland cypress and Chinese privet. For palms, we have to go to private nurseries.
