personal names for palms

Featured Replies

Anybody call there palm something that is not a scientific name or common name for it?

My wife could care less about palm specifics, but she names the various palms in the yard so I know who she is talking about.….  “Hulk”, “Baby-Yoda”, “Spike”, “Joe Biden”, “Donald Trump”, “Big-Yoda”,  “Hawaii”, “Fireball”, etc…

I haven't yet but I like the idea.

I see a game in guessing what the palm is based on it’s nickname.

Dammit.

As in "Grow Damn it!"

Soon I can say the blue one once the brahea is visible above ground.

"The big one in the backyard", "The big one in the front yard", "The little one in the front yard", "The little one near the driveway", "The one by the fence gate", "The little one over there with the potted plants".

I bought SIX flamethrowers... partly to increase the chance one will be "flaming"  at any particular point. What's funny is that they seem to be aligning themselves timing-wise. On the bright side, it should be an amazing show if they did all go off together!

To clarify which "flamethrower" we're talking about, we named each after people we've bought palms from. Those in Southern California might recognize some of our flamethrower names (Joe, Josh, Jesse, Phil, Jack & Arlene).

Here are "Jack" (hookeri) & Arlene" (macrocarpa) on adoption day...

Guilty. I have named several palms. Silly as it is to some I know to get the know the plants ‘personality’ before naming them - it helps ease premature losses as well.

Our Normanbya normanbyi is called Fred, of coarse. lol

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.

This issue has been addressed in previous threads,  mine are 'Siegmund und Sieglinde'.  Why ????

They are Trachycarpus wagnerianus, they are siblings from the same seed lot, and they are opposite gender !   :mrlooney:

San Francisco, California

I think that some personal names people in the community have come up with are bizzie for Bismarkia and washy for washingtonia and trachy for trachycarpus which I think is funny enough!

Looks like Phil and Arlene need to get with the program and get themselves a "J" name like everyone selling flamethrowers.

Corpus Christi, TX, near salt water, zone 9b/10a! Except when it isn't and everything gets nuked.

Banana Palms - Foster, Foster Jr.

Pygmy Date - Faith

Christmas Palm - Noel

Palmetto Sabal - Mr. Palmetto

Washingtonia - Skyduster

Cat Palm - Nyan

Still need to name Areca, open to suggestions

Yes, count me in. Have a large Howeia - I call her Nemi (short version of Nemesis) for decades. It is my old lady and a kind of a queen among all the other palms. 🙂

In deepest sorrow for Pal Meir - Jens, I will never forget you ... 😪

I would like to see a pic of your old lady Nemi. Or is she too shy? 🥰

No problem at all, Pal. Here you go (with my current wallpaper [about 1 year old] and a photo I've made on Sunday evening). 🙂
Nemi is really very large now, so I have to tie the leaves together. In all its glory (untied), Nemi takes more than half of the living room.

I am overwhelmed. I'm lost for words. It looks like the Lord Howe Islands. 😍

Thank you, Pal. 🙂
Many years ago, I have posted a photo of Nemi here - outside on the loggia. It was really difficult to bring the palm outside due to its size and especially weight (soil was wet). But we had warm and strong summer rain those days, Nemi had earned it. To clean here leaves manually takes about one hour, I am very meticulous to get each single one.

If it is feasible, I will try to make a photo in full size, without binders. Guess I have to leave the living room to bring Nemi on the photo in one piece. 😂
