One year and a half Bismark palm tree

Featured Replies

Bought this Bismark a year and a half ago.  Planted it in September 2020.

It was a small palm.  Looks healthy.  Wondering how long before it starts showing off those characteristic long arms and huge leaves ?

Perhaps those with experience with these Bismark palms could let me know what to expect and how long before leaves get that characteristic big size.

Perhaps after 2 years ?  At 3 years ?  Just wondering.

I know it will take a while for it to be a big palm tree, trunk wise, but I have seen several  that although not showing a big trunk yet, develop those long arms and leaves characteristic of the species.

Thanks.

Misspelling

Mesa, Arizona

Temps between 29F and 115F each year

Bismarckia grow very fast with heat so it just depends on that in my experience. I think it really depends on the location and if you have cold winters.

It really depends on your location.  They like heat, humidity, and lots of water.  I planted a pair of 3g pots (same size as your palm) in the summer of 2018.  Here is a photo of my backyard one in December 2020, so 2.5 years from the size of your palm.  In the photo it's probably about 10' tall.  They are now almost 15' tall and have around 5-6' diameter fronds.

Thanks Merlyn

Seems the bigger they get the faster they grow.
I was analyzing photos Aztropic posted in his / her tread and in those photos what you say corroborates.

From the size mine are, now, in about 2 years and 4 months it looks like yours now which as you say took 2.5 years.

Checking the photos Aztropic has, from year 8 to year 17 the growth accelerates dramatically.

So mid through year 2024 Int Bismark should be looking like yours which is what I crave.  Once it develops those long arms and large fan leaves, I will be mire than happy, these are amazing gorgeous palm trees !!!

Thanks so much !

Yeah, his photos look very similar in growth rate.  Here's a photo in August 2019, about 1 year after I planted mine from the 3g pot.  The fans are getting bigger, but it's only about 5-6' tall.

And here is the same plant just after I put it in the ground in the summer of 2018.

And here it is today, around 3.5 years from planting.  The fronds are pretty close to mature, though it hasn't started trunking yet:

They are indeed beautiful and impressive palms I have 10 in the ground and love them!! They are the palm I always get the most comment’s about!!

One problem with bismarckia is they grow tall too fast and then you cant view the crown anymore unlss you are 40' away from it and underneath is empty.  Another problem is if you get a female, 200lbs+ of fruit falls yearly, that limits what can grow under it and its a lot of work removing the fruit which can damage a lawn mower.  If I had to do t again I would plant a second one 5-6 years after the first so there is one down low all the time.  My neighbors get to see mine more than me, but it does throw some nice shade on the car in summer.  First pic is oct 2010, 2nd and 3rd are nov 2020, 10 yrs time

Beautiful !!!!

They grow really, really fast. First pic is May 2015 - don’t mind the flooded street lol. Second is Feb 2022. Notice the growth of the D. lutescens too, another fast one.

If you want it to grow faster, remove the turf a few feet out. It will promote root expansion.
