Any CIDP? How are prices?

HGC video on website says they grow their own plants locally now. Those windmills use to come from out west. They look ratty and yellow. It’s no wonder the Queens get planted. Some of those big ones look Florida grown. My guess is they are.

Didn't see any CIDP. 3 gal queens & pygmies are $20, 7 gal(?) foxtails $84

Was at Barton springs last Tuesday and also noticed S Causiarum, B Armata, T Wagnerianus (snatched one), S Guatemalensis, a big silver medi.

Drove past the local blue big box this morning, parking lot had a fenced in area that was not open that was loaded with foxtails, bottles, queens, pymgies, who knows what else but was hard to see.  I was hoping to see some bizzies or mules but did not.  Will have to stop over later when they have opened it up.

They are a ripoff from what I’ve seen. Their  business location doesn’t have much onsite inventory, most of it is stored at their offsite nursery. I think they deal in mostly installs around pools, expensive homes, etc in the Sugarland area.

Moon Valley nursery on I-10 and BW8 has tons of palms incl. mules, dates, Sabal, Livistona, Butia, etc. Some rarer stuff sometimes. Don't know about pricing

I stopped at the HGC on the Far East side near the San Jacinto exit 2 weeks ago, no CIDP’s, just queens, robusta and windmills, that’s it, it was a small nursery.

Went to Millberger's today in San Antonio.  Prices were straight up "redonkulious" for most stuff (inflation and all I guess).  They did have about 20 + Sabal sps. with over 7' of trunk, which was a little more than I am used to seeing there.

The one in the middle was labeled 8 1/2' of trunk, and selling for $1450 (that was one of the cheaper ones).  The tag said that price included planting and a guarantee (whatever that entails).  I have never bought a palm that big, so I have no idea how reasonable that price is; however, its sounds pretty high to me.  Some were still fruiting, with fruits smaller than peas.  That makes me think Sabal palmetto, possibly Florida stock.

I also stopped by Rainbow Gardens (Thousand Oaks location).  They were selling two Brahea calcarea (utilizing the synonym Brahea nitida; vernacular "White Rock Palm") for $240 each, and few smaller Bismarckia nobilis for $45 and $100, respectively.  Other more common palms too, but those were the "not-so-common" ones that had me take notice.

Yeah that Sabal is a tad expensive, I was once quoted $450 for a tree and install, about the same size as the one in your pic. $200 if I just wanted the tree but I have no way of loading up and planting a tree that size. This is in south Alabama, I’m sure they are probably cheaper here seeing how they are everywhere in this area and we’re 30 mins from Florida line.

It is worth the trip to the Rio Grande Valley to pick up hardy palms.    The prices here are half of those in Austin, if not less.    Plus,  you can get fabulous tamales to take home as well.

That's where I got my B. calcarea at the Thousand Oaks location.  Back in 2019 a slightly smaller palm in the next smaller container was $45!  Bandera location also has them for the same price but smaller selection of palms.

I dunno, when I see nurseries ( businesses in general) without prices you end up with pricing based on what you drive in and what’s your native language.

You bring cash and speak Spanish.   That is also a bonus of having money and curiosity.   Otherwise, you overpay in Austin.

Still looking for a 15 gallon or Larger Canary Island Date Palm. Most I ever spent on a single palm was $400 total. I payed 70% off mine in 2000 at HGC so I got them for $90 in those large wooden boxes. Those were the good days!

Last early spring Lowes in the Austin area got in some 10 gal Canaries, but I wasn't ready to think of replanting.

I definitely enjoy going down there, but a 10-12 hour round trip when I don’t know what I’ll find or if I’ll bring anything back is a hard argument. You would need another primary reason for going.

“The great outdoors” in Austin has the same palms from Mountain States Wholesale Nursery listed as Nitida, for approximately the same price.

Yes, round trip. Unless you are moving there. Its actually over 6 hours there, and 6 hours back. 12-13 hours of driving to buy palms. You would definitely have to know what you were going for, for it to make sense.

John Fairy Garden has 5 gallon Brahea Armata and a 5 gallon Jubaea for $250. They had Macrozamia listed as available,turns out that was intended for garden. Big bummer! 

I was told they don’t sell their much sought after Sabal Uresana. I wish someone could convince them otherwise. Nuts. Just Nuts.

The 8.5’ sabal would be about $380 in the Rio grande valley- cash price. You would need to haul and plant.

The Lowes in Pearland had some oversized Bottle Palms pushing out of their 25 gallon containers. They also had huge Foxtails that reached the entry way roof of that greenhouse/awning in the picture. For those that can grow them.

I stopped by Paradise Palms at York creek today in New Braunfels.  Decent selection of palms including large palms.  They have Queens, Pindos, Washingtonias, Sylvester dates, canary island dates, windmills, med fans, pygmy dates, sabals, and a variety of other palms.  Prices too high, although he did have Mexican fan palms for 24 dollars.

Did they have small Sabals available? I bought a 1 gallon from them several years ago but I’ve never seen a smaller Sabal since.

I don't remember exactly, but around 130 or 140 dollars.  Good size.  I don't know how many gallons pot, but they were decent sized, top frond maybe 2.5 or 3 ft high.  These are rough estimates.  I almost got one.   I thought it was a little overpriced, I would have like to seen it around 70 or 80 dollars for that size, but oh well.

I'm almost positive he had small sabals.  I will try to double check, it's 10 min from my house.  He has large Sabals everywhere, but I think he had a few small ones also.

Ok yeah that sounds about right. They looked healthy and decent sized, if not a little over priced.

No new palms this week at Barton but plenty of cactus. Neobuxbaumia polylopha, Espostoa lanata, Trichocereus terscheckii, etc.
