As I was leaving the California Nursery Historical Park (Fremont CA) I was shocked to see that the 147-year-old CIDPs were scraped/shaved all up and down the trunk.

I'm used to seeing people pineapple them, but usually they leave the lower section with the beautiful leaf scars alone.

Some of the trunks look like planed carrots, not round like they were.

Is this ok to do this to palms? It seems like the people who did this don't know the first thing about palm structure.

Have they created new places for the trees to become diseased?

It seems like a really expensive thing to do if there is no reason to do this, especially if you are endangering the palms.

I wanted to check with you all about this, before I contact the city.

I noticed that they did this in other areas of the city as well, not just at the park.
