Trachycarpus princeps germination

Recommended Posts

I received 40 T. princeps seeds in the mail today. Seems to be no general consensus on the the best method for germinating these yet, at least what I was able to dig up.  Wondering if anyone who has germinated them before can impart their wisdom on me? Specifically, what medium did you use, bottom heat yes/no, did you pre-soak the seed before hand etc…

I’ve grown many, many T. fortunei seeds before using a 50/50 peat perlite mix with no bottom heat. I figure the T. princeps might benefit from bottom heat as they come from a slightly warmer climate?

Well for what its worth I will be trying with bottom heat, but I'll raise my community pot off the heat a wee bit so its not quite as hot as it would be for Sabals etc...

They were sown on Saturday, so we will see how long they take to pop. I'll update this thread as they emerge. Or if I am a total failure!

I'm assuming Garry is shipping this seasons harvest from the Stone Gate.    Remove the fruit and soak to make sure all of the fruit residue is totally off.  A dip in a mild bleach solution is a good idea before sowing.  I use coco/perlite mix, no bottom heat.  They germinate best at room temperatures especially when summer hits.  Be patient, these usually take awhile.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, they came from Gary. I never remove the fruit off fortunei, but I’ll do it for the princeps. I’ll take them off the bottom heat too.

My experience is that it's more likely to mold if you leave the fruit on.  Not that it matters if you have a few thousand fortunei seeds, but less than 100 and I clean them.  Tedious process.

Like you, I never have and I've grown thousands of fortunei. Never tried the princeps though.

So how long did it take to get those seeds from China?

I was curious as well about ordering from him.  Was there an extra fee for a phyto cert?  I assume his seeds are reputable since he posts here on PT occasionally?

I've been waiting for two years now.  That's why I'm surprised that people are getting theirs and mine have not shipped yet.  I should have been at the top of the list.

It took pretty much 1 month from the time I ordered till the time they showed up in my mailbox.

No phyto cert required for importing small quantities of non-invasive seeds into Canada. I've heard nothing but good things about Gary's seeds.

Good for you!  Apparently he is shipping new orders ahead of people who have been waiting years.  Maybe I will get mine this season if they haven't run out already.

Well hopefully you get yours sooner than later. Would be great to see many more of these palms being grown around the PNW.

@Fallen Munk Where did you source those if you don't mind my asking?   Also what kind of cactus are you growing there?

A fellow forum member, I can't remember now.  Cactus was from Lowes with no tag.  Died first frost.

Didn’t they come from @Josh-O?  I think he had some nice princeps at one point.

Yep, that's him.  I also got an email from Gerry today saying my seeds have shipped with overcount to make up for the long wait.  Maybe summer germination.

This is the palm I asked my friends in Yunnan, China to find. Can someone help me identify if this is Trachycarpus princeps?

After a year and 3 months I'm finally seeing life out of these princeps seeds. I checked on them today and looks like they all came up at once! Another one of the species where patience is key I guess. I had them on a heat mat all winter with no movement, but moved them into the greenhouse on the same heat mat about a month ago. For whatever reason, that seems to be the kickstart that got them going. I'll have to separate these all out and pot them up this weekend.

@Chester B @Fallen Munk how did your princeps handle the winter? Hoping these are a bulletproof win for the PNW, this winter was the one to test that theory out.

My two Princeps are alive.  Last year they both spear pulled in very late spring, so they have been slowly recovering, with the emphasis on slow.  They make Sabal minor look downright quick.

This year I put a plastic garden cloches over them and supplied no heat.  So they were exposed to the 19F/-7C and look fine.

Again I'm going to emphasize slow.  The slowest growing palms I have.  They must be 6 or 7 years old and are still tiny, with tiny fan leaves.

Where did you order these seeds from?

@floridaPalmMan Gary at coldplant.com. He posts from time to time in the for sale section, not sure if he has any this year.
