Happy Frog and Other Good Potting Soils?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Has anyone tried Happy Frog potting soil from Fox Farms with their palms? I can get a pretty good deal on a 2 cubic feet bag, and I’ve seen pretty good reviews on this medium… just none regarding palms, yet. Otherwise, are there any other potting soil/mixes that would be recommended?

Never tried any of their soil. I use generic ace potting soil, generic manure and perlite…mix it in a wheel barrel to the consistency desired according to palm/plant. I used peat moss in the past as an additive, but don’t really prefer it. No seedlings or potted up plants have died the years I’ve been doing it.

I think it's relative a bit to where you are using it. If you are in a warm/hot area a heavier mix is okay. In a cooler location (So Cal coastal), I like to mix in their "light warrior" to allow superior drainage.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!
