Sabal Minor “ Welfare”

There was some debate on here whether Plant Delights Nursery had the correct locality for these(Welfare, Texas) or if they even naturally existed that far west at all. I couldn’t find the thread, but a member spent time in the area and found no sign.

Here is the picture from PDN’s website.

I dedicated some time after a roadtrip today into an attempt at locating them. I figured with everything turning red, orange, or brown they might stick out. A few Yucca, Nolina, and Dasylirion species are common to the area.

Due to it being a “ghost town” among a lightly populated area, mapping was poor. Some maps didn’t register it as a location and my paper map and google showed it approximately where “Nelson City” is located.

The true Welfare is a couple miles west of there and consists of a historical marker and an abandoned general store that has been restored.F8FEF702-4D6F-4499-8950-D0116D142B8C.thumb.jpeg.1ede0bff5d2af718b5c5381b69c835b8.jpeg6C5FE0E1-EDAE-441A-A53D-E30075E5014F.thumb.jpeg.3b0cb54f754ff48e646ded25bd80c3dd.jpeg

Pretty much everything  in the area is private land. I even found a road on the map that is now fenced in. I didn’t locate the palms in PDN’s photo but was able to verify Sabal Minor does in fact exist in the area. These were growing in a creek bed, likely from seeds that washed down stream from another population. I intended to try and locate the original population in the photograph but ran out of light. I will be back.76B52818-A19C-4CB7-BB2B-13A8CDB69DF9.thumb.jpeg.a20a5c0eedb3d7678319a6a3d24ba63d.jpeg0A66F95B-B2AA-4587-B594-DCAE59914EBB.thumb.jpeg.3f793c061d7d6e6b0c45c99605ebc207.jpeg53BAB82C-86BC-46B8-BED1-D8E795621A3B.jpegCF87C0D4-EF63-4009-ABE6-FE9D75FE7E7D.thumb.jpeg.2512229d7a46f8c229f618ec31d195c3.jpegB4D5A0CF-C8D9-4453-8833-86CC9A611F79.thumb.jpeg.83b8c6e45849620eddab67eab7db54d6.jpeg0A57250D-2ABD-411B-A514-54FF61D200A5.thumb.jpeg.12bd13fffc8b456e3bca330245b4b5cd.jpegDBC0EBBF-69CC-49AE-87FC-8AA7DD01AFBA.thumb.jpeg.5aca410e9e3d1b3bd00d10ad0dcb2e34.jpegF68A21D7-8EE6-438D-AD44-4935FACD108D.thumb.jpeg.2a2317eab6136fa3618be6143b67a92b.jpeg961544DB-AE63-4827-947C-71A93C5A6FD8.thumb.jpeg.94cff059ca60a0a9af2a9382e2e867b6.jpegC503B067-669C-473E-A55D-35D77087CFDD.jpeg

Here is nearby Waring. Another unique town.

Wonderful log!! I had not heard of those!
:greenthumb:
Just spoke to the plant-god of Texas (Adam Black) and confirmed they are on private land (cannot disclose where) and they will get DNA from those at some point.

Thanks guys.

I figured it was on private land. There are a lot of newer homes being built on the hills surrounding the town. I was hopeful the population didn’t somehow get razed.

I like the idea of unknown/ undocumented populations of palms out there. The flip side like you said @Meangreen94z is how many have been destroyed for development that went unnoticed? Gary Hollar told me they do a lot of phosphorus mining in NC and will just knock down huge areas of native habitat without blinking an eye, a few times he knows of that contained 8-10 foot ancient Sabal minor populations.
