Will potted Trachies and Sabal keep growing indoors?

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

I have about 7 in pots I will bring in, probably in the next few weeks. My indoor conditions have giant south windows and I have a metal halide on a track for my houseplants. Humidity is usually 50-60% and temp 66-74F. Are these favorable enough conditions that I could expect to see any growth during the winter indoors? More so, should I keep watering them on a nice schedule to keep them active or still scale back?

Thanks in advance!

I water about once every 2 weeks for mine over winter.  if in a heated space double check the humidity for sure as in winter the indoor humidity can be quite low and bad for plants.   Just keep the soil moist as usual.  They will grow a little.  Palms will grow MUCH faster planted and outdoors.  I keep mine in the garage and the humidity stays good because it's a unheated space but doesn't get too cold because mine is insulated and heated rooms on 3 sides (2 walls and above).  I keep my potted Trachy that are at least 3' or so out in pots till 25F or so.

Very nice setup! I plan to get them all in the ground come spring, but was hoping for a few leaves indoors until then. Thank you for the tips and pic!

Glad I am not the only one with this kind of "garage"! LOL.

My greenhouse/garage is detached so, I need to supply some extra heat in the winter.  It does face directly south and winter sun here is pretty good (not sure about Ohio sun conditions).  I reserve this for cold tolerant species only (Trachycarpus, Syagrus, Butia, Jubaea, Livistona, Rhapis, and even Chamaedorea (not to mention the cycads). I really do NOT want to encourage growth though, it's too chilly, they are kept very dry and I don't feed at all.  It's not forever, they go in November and emerge beginning in early March.

I grow my younger minor and trachy seedlings in the winter inside. I use heat mats with a thermostat and led lighting.

I have tons of heat mats I’m not using and that makes sense it would help!

This is my setup. I’m standing in the south windows and have the metal halide on a track to give even light throughout winter. I put circles where I will put the larger trachies and sabal. I use a levoit humidifier to keep it between 50-60%.

@steve617 @ColumbusPalmI’ve been growing all kinds of house plants for years in front of south facing windows with led or fluorescent lights above for a little extra lol. Had quite a few Sabal palmetto seedlings and a few bigger palmettos under this setup inside last winter. The seedlings kept growing all winter but the bigger potted sabals definitely stalled out.

Very interesting. I know the main reason my minors moved this season was the heat and humidity we had throughout the summer. I may have to accept they will stall and hope the trachies will like the home conditions enough to grow.

Yeah for sure all of them grew a lot as soon as they got back outside this spring and summer. Overwinter inside was a different story. Curious how much humidity indoors has to do with it?

Most of mine I had them on a shelf. I had the back and sides closed with reflectx mylar installation. Had a 2x4 heat pad with a thermostat had the plants in pots I'm a tray. I'd set the temp like low 80s wired led florescent lights with timers. Actually had several of those. Most of mine were minors and trachycarpus. They grew very good. I also have a spray bottle and mist them a couple times a day. Plus watered tgem a couple times a day and even gave fish emulsion occasionally. Had a few bugs but what helped was putting a layer of perlite on top.

Yeah I battled fungus gnats with the palms inside, learned to top the soil with gravel or perlite like you said. Feel like some of these lessons need to be learned the hard way.

Fluorescent grow lights from amazon.  Hydrofarm brand.

If you were to use the light for just the palms you could probably get some growth

but these types of plants are not happy long term inside and it would be better not

to encourage to much weaker winter growth even though the palm could for sure

grow out of it once in the ground....
