San Antonio Minor?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

A few years ago I was sent seeds thay came from this sabal from a guy in San Antonio. I showed this pic to a palm friend on the east coast. He mentioned it looks different from the ones in our area on the east coast. Would this just be labeled as a sabal minor Texas. Thanks for any ideas. I have a few now that's about 3 yrs old. I really like the way they are looking.. Notice. The location of the seeds.. Thanks for any info.

I see a bunch daily in East Austin that look just like this, just collected seeds from them last week.

All of them are at least as big as one in the pic above and grow pretty fast

Nothing unusual there. There's tons of Sabal minor throughout the east, central and south of Texas.

Thanks I'm in East TN 7a I have about 10 potted a couple with split fronds. Their one of my favorite minors I'm growing. Not sure how they will do in my area. I plan on planting a couple late spring and will do a little winter protection a couple years.

At McDonalds in North Austin @1608 East Parmer lane.

These all have a trunk, and have put on significant size in last two years.

these are definitely different than mccurtain or any of inland east coasts versions

That’s crazy to me those are common there! Do you think those are just your typical Texas eco type of Sabal minor or possibly Sabal Brazoria? Just crazy seeing so many trunking minors to me

I’ve got a few different sabals in the ground in Clarksville, TN. They do just fine with no protection for me.

That's cool I have a lot of minors in pots. I have a brazoria in the ground and a few reg generic minors I got in south carolina. This coming spring I'll plant Louisiana, Hatteras and my San antonio minors. Glad yours doing good.

I would guess that there is brazoria in these. There are a lot of them in this immediate area that look the exact same. All went unscathed this past winter

Pic of these minors in early 2018 versus today. Major difference. Over 6 feet tall now. Can’t even distinguish the individual plants anymore

That was my first thought, although they could possibly be Tamaulipas. Theres about a hundred of them planted commercially in a couple mile radius, none are in swampy or wet areas either

Every time I drive past I grab some. I’m gonna collect all the older ones off the ground too and start throwing them out my window into highway medians while driving

Take some garden shears and just snip off a branch and you got a hundreds of seeds in one snip.
