Hello,

I have a 24” hole that either snugly fits a 20g or has generous room for a 15g.

The soil is poor and it’s next to a sidewalk so I’m unsure how well the palm will do so I was thinking to start as large as possible. Is 20g too big?

full sun and plenty of water.

Thanks

I have groves of King Palms, some over 30 feet tall and all started from 1 or 5 gallon plants as well as seveveral volunteer King palms from seed dropped out of these palms. The only thing you need to worry about is water, and lots of it. Poor soil seems to not adversely effect them or proximity to sidewalks, foundations, etc. Just keep the soil wet and they will reward you with fast and lush growth.

Got it but in the name of instant gratification in a house we may not have a decade in would we be OK w a 20 gallon?

They grow really fast, you'll be better off with a smaller plant to start.

fast growing palms have fast growing roots.  Part of that is rooting hormone production by the plant and that slows with age.  The young plant will catch up in a few years and look better ultimately  my own experience.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??
