Hello All,

We are first time palm tree owners and have very little experience. We are in Southern California where temperatures are close to 100 in the summer. We have some concerns regarding our palm tree.

1) One of the trees looks like it’s penciling, very thin near the crown. Will the palm tree eventually grow this back to normal?

2) Our biggest concern is the tree where the leaves are growing out looking distorted. Is anybody able to tell us what is wrong with the tree and if it’s salvageable?

Thank you!

The one on the right looks like it has a severe nutrient deficiency or some kind of infection / disease.   That one is probably dead or dying.  The one in the middle looks not so healthy.  The one on the left looks fine to me.

Do you think some palm tree food would help either trees?

Severe manganese deficiency on the palm to the right. It may be too late to save. Get a good palm specific fertilizer and feed all your palms. Ideally, they should be fed spring, summer, and fall. Keep them well hydrated as well.

Thanks Jim. I have Jobe’s organic plant food for palms on hand but it doesn’t specify that it has manganese sulfate in it. Will this work or should I buy something that states it includes manganese sulfate?

Posted

you can buy manganese sulfate at home depot to supplement the organic if you want.

Ok, I will look for manganese sulfate. Hopefully this works and it’s not too late! Thank you all for the help.

Better to use the shotgun approach.  I think it is Boron, Potassium and manganese.  Magnesium is always welcomed by palms.  Apply some 8-2-12 as well.

So many species,

so little time.

Thanks Jerry! I applied Jobes organic for palms which states it has Magnesium. Hopefully this helps, I was jus concerned about a lack of Manganese in the ingredients and didn’t know if I needed to supplement it.
