I’m loving the progress! I’m just curious, how does everyone protect their seedlings from deer and rabbits? I’ve been trying to grow palms inside and outside my fence for years with no success because of these two…

thanks

Thanks! The only way I know how to protect seedlings in the ground is fencing, when I first planted this palmetto, I put a fence around it because I knew rabbits came around occasionally but I don’t see them anymore and I’ve removed the fence just recently.

Two of the Sabal Causiarums I have are actually pushing new growth finally after the long transplant shock and I'm so happy for them!! I was starting to worry cause they had no activity of growth at all but it's good to see the new leaves and the roots have settled all the way through and are growing out the bottom and I can't wait to get them in the ground this spring!

Did you put these guys in the ground? I’ve planted a few this spring. Two big 25g ones and a few strap leaf ones. They’re all already moving.

I had one almost die so I had to transplant it into a pot to let it recover but the other one was transplanted into the ground back in april!

Right on. I’ve got some that I planted in the ground a couple years ago. Once they start moving they giddy up compared to any other sabal I’ve grown.

I planted a couple that were supposed to be , but ended up being domengensis, burned in the low 20’s, to the compost pile they went

Fingers crossed for you. My palms have “suffered” in pots for many more years than I anticipated. Building a house anywhere is spitting distance of covid was set back after set back 🙄

I worry keeping them in pots very long because I wanna enjoy their growth in the ground but I'd to have to leave them behind if a move happened and since sabals really take half a lifetime and collecting them all over again and starting from scratch scares me 😭

Took this photo yesterday, very exciting to see it's getting some size on it and it feels like with each frond just slightly faster than the last. 🤠

Since I've moved to this house 2017 I've been taking branches with seeds on them from my Sabal minor (across the back of the property) to try to extend their range along both property lines on the left and right. I'm happy to say it has been successful. Here's a shot of crape myrtle 'Sioux', which I just planted last year along the driveway (a fragment of which is visible in lower left hand corner of photo) with naturalized sabals below.

It will eventually get to the point where I have too many and will have to begin pulling them, but I haven't reached that point yet. In fact, I'm thrilled with the results. Having Sabal minor as filler gives the landscaping a graceful, tropical appearance.

And I have hibiscus (syriacus) too!

Very nice! Kind of fitting that a Sabal minor would pop up under a crape myrtle. I feel like anything that will sprout will do it under a crape myrtle because that's where oaks, Bradford pears, and mimosas will grow out of nowhere if we don't keep its trunk cleaned up. That's my goal one day to hopefully naturalize palmetto down in the swamp and also Sabal minor in my yard! I wish palm seedlings were my issue but instead, it's Bahia grass. Hibiscus is one of my favorite flowers, this one is so pretty! I feel like I need more flowers and filler plants for all the empty spaces I have.

Has your Hibiscus ever set seed?

The only real shaded spots I've got around the house are under those giant crepe myrtles and I'm putting minors there when my seeds pop.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. The crape myrtle is new. The Sabal minor have been there for a few years.

This is the area left behind after a giant live oak came down over the course of a couple of years. It's a nice opportunity to try some new plants but in this climate it's nicer still to have shade.

The white hibiscus with the red eye is H. syriacus, Rose of Sharon, which is notorious for producing seedlings. This one hasn't yet.
