Anyone growing a Gaussia maya in Mediterranean climate?

I planted last year a juvenile one from an 1 US gal pot.  It performed remarkably well during past winter, when temp dipped once close to 0 C accompanied with snowfall. I know it not to be frost tolerant at all but at least it turns out quite cool tolerant. Moreover it does not seem to become affected by the winter's cold in its ability to promote new growth during following warm season. New fronds are bigger than those of previous year. What it your own experience?

Mine has surprisingly breezed past a few winters here unprotected. Probably hasn’t seen freezing temperatures, but we’ve had about 5/6 frosts this season alone and typical winter days are chilly (13-14C max, 6-7C min). Weirdly it doesn’t seem to mind the cool despite what I’ve read elsewhere and is actually still pushing a spear now. I dont think I have a recent photo, I’ll have to take one soon.

Hmm.

Guassias seem to do well here, though my experience is mixed, because, I think, I'm not quite as quick on the draw with their cultural requirements as perhaps I should be.

I bought a great big one from Bluebell (20 - 25 gallon pot) and planted it in my garden, under which I'm gonna eat some lamb chops later this week. I'll take pictures of it. Some do much better than others; mine's not so great, not exactly sure why.

They grow fast, so (generally) if they get hit with problems, they'll often bounce back quickly if conditions are otherwise good. They like heat, and regular moisture. The seeds are easier than a life of depravity and least resistance. Plant them, water them, and BOOM, up they come. (Like depravity.)

@Phoenikakias I think you have the right general idea, keep yours well protected, at least till it gets too big. If it's happy, it will get about King Palm size, though it doesn't have as many leaves.

If you can, get a few seeds of G. gomez-ponapae; they're a bit faster and hold more leaves. I've got them, too, "up the wazoo" as we say . . . .

Your winter is slightly milder than mine.  Just that we can get an idea of its cool tolerance.

I have no illusions that this plant together with several other palm spp in my garden will ultimately get killed by the next freaky, every 50 years (literally) cold spell. At least I have another 34 years to enjoy my tropical palms, which, given average life expectancy, is more than enough time for me.

Is Gaussia maya a 10a or 10b plant?

I believe they are a US zone 9b palm. Mine are totally hardy here in FL.

I don't know if Sydney is Mediterranean climate, mine is slow but doesn't seem to mind the winter or summer.

It only got down to 8 or 9 degrees at night for a couple of weeks this last winter.

Here’s my specimen, under which I had my Abendessen for this evening. Parajubaea cocoides in the background.

It’s about seven feet or 2.3 meters tall.

Actually Keith Boyer mentioned in his book your climate as warm subtropical.

A couple of photos of mine. Still small and wedged between a Plumeria and Heliconia so hard to take good photos of. I’ll cut back the Heliconia this Spring to give it a bit more space and sun. Pretty much hasn’t even spotted at all in winter since being in the ground.
