Needing to clean about a hundred sabal seeds I just received.  In the past I have done:

-By hand (messy, time consuming)

-In a bucket of water with a wire wheel on a drill extension (worked well, but still had to physically "pop" each seed outer layer so the wire wheel could "catch".  still took a while and then the endless skimming/sifting between the cleaned off matter and seeds started - but this was probably 1200 seeds I was doing at that time.  Faster than by hand for sure)

Read in another post someone mentioning using two hard flat surfaces and rubbing them together with the seed in between so may see what that does.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Put your hundred seeds on concrete driveway/sidewalk. Use flat soled shoes to lightly apply pressure and roll around underfoot.

Is it even necessary to clean sabal seeds?  Toss on ground and they sprout .

For seeds that are fibrous and hard to clean, I just plant them straight away. Pritchardia and some Areca seeds are so time consuming to remove the covering that I don’t bother with that exercise. If they are fresh, germination rates from just sticking them in a pot, is extremely high.

Other seeds are so easy to clean it’s a piece of cake.

@aztropic you are a flat out genius!  Driveway + spare block of 2x4 = WIN! @JubaeaMan138 thanks for the second!

Slight modification as that fruit matter is like tar.  Avoiding that at all costs lest I accidentally wear those shoes inside in the future.  Wood block had enough friction against the driveway to pop them all right out.  Couple passes and I was done.

Anyone interested in a wire wheel, 36" drill extension and a bucket?  Hear it just became available...   .... asking for a friend

I did the same with some fresh Butia seed the other day on asphalt. Worked great, however, didn't want to be in the streets for that long.

I use a paint/mortar mixer to beat the majority of the pulp off the seed.  Rinse and remove majority of waste pulp then will finish cleaning them with the wire wheel.
