Naturalized (?) cocos nucifera in the Florida Keys

A while back, there was some discussion about how/if coconut trees had naturalized in Florida.

Today I took the family to Marvin Key. It’s a tiny, mangrove island at the edge of the archipelago in the lower keys ( https://www.google.com/maps?q=marvin+key+map&rlz=1CDGOYI_enUS868US871&hl=en-US&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjw0_GX_vTxAhVySTABHcy4AcYQ_AUoAXoECAIQAQ )  It’s only accessible by boat.

in the middle of the island, near the little entry beach, there is a coconut tree. No idea how it got there. Best guess is either a bird or the nut floated in from somewhere else. Where that might be… no idea. There are no inhabited islands for probably 5 miles.

and, I do apologize for the far off pictures. I didn’t want to carry my phone off the boat because… you know… water.

Maybe I was thinking of a post about guerilla planting. But I do recall promising a pic of this C. Nucifera. Alas, a man of my word.

I see many these days on the Loxahatchee and intercostal that clearly are just from washed up coconuts. I have them sprout up all over if I get lazy about picking up the nuts.
