Sabal blackburniana odd spiral growth

Recommended Posts

I bought this nice Sabal blackburniana online and was quite surprised when I discovered that there are three growing points on the same plant. I don't believe that these are three different plants grown from seed in the same pot.  It rather seems like the growth point has been damaged at some time and now two additional  spiral growth points emerged.  But that's just a guess. What do you think?

The seller now has responded my inquiry about this topic.  According to him, these are in fact 3 seperate plants:blush:.  How should I remove the smaller two to prevent them from coming back?

Sabals are pretty picky with their roots, I'd leave it.  I've posted photos of a triple minor, it looked great not weird at all.

I  certainly would love to have a Sabal double/triple.  After all, I joined three Parajubaea sunkha in one pot, just to eventually create the look of one big palmy bush.  But I am not sure how this is going to work with this S. blackburniana triple. I tried to visualize the odd growth of the two smaller Sabals.  The bigger one of these two is making a  >360° curve and is directly above the smaller one.  I guess this will pose a problem in 3-5 years when the stems will be considerably larger in diameter.

Let's say I would cut down one of the smaller two and straighten out the other one? Would this be somehow possible and if so,  which one would you choose to rescue? The blue one is certainly bigger, but I don't think  I can straighten the 360° curve.

Hmm, interesting situation. I think I would just leave it and see what happens. "Life; uh, finds a way". If I don't like it, I can always easily cut a trunk off (when they are still juvenile!).
