Post a closeup of part of a palm — trunk, frond, crownshaft, whatever, and first to get it right goes next. So only play if you are willing to contribute if you win.
Here goes— a trunk familiar to many of you:

OK, Guess The Palm #2. I’m sticking with a trunk, partial crown shaft photo, but certainly not limited to that. Here ya go!

OK, can you guess this one ? It's still a quite young and small specimen and probably won't get big in my zone.

Okay John! You win, but I'm amazed no one else even tried. :( And just for the record, the genus is Metroxylon and the epithet is "amicorum." It's the form that doesn't die after flowering. :)

So, John, got a nice pic of the detail of a palm someone other than we east Hawaii folks might know? I realize you are in CandyLand when it comes to palms!

Metroxylon amicorum. Not much else like it as far as I know. A very striking palm. Happy to introduce it to you!

Good guess. These palms are truly amazing

An older palm collector a mile or two away from me has one. Cool palm. I seem to recall that the flowers are somewhat less than pleasant smelling. Is that right?

Anyway, I suppose it's my turn.

Guihaia argyrata?

Yep. I figured my selection would either be very difficult or very easy. Turned out to be the latter. I was considering using the silver bronze underside of the leaf but my wife really liked the photo of the hastula area.

For those that don't know, Guihaia are unique in the palm world for being the only palmate leaved palms with reduplicate ('A' shaped cross section) leaflets as opposed to induplicate ('V' shaped) leaflets. This makes for a quick and reliable ID if you know to look for it.

I love my clump of Guihaias. Totally trouble free. They have withstood having heavy Foxtail fronds dropped on them from above for over 20 years with nary a complaint. Also excellent in a hurricane lol.

Next time it makes seeds I'll try to share some here. Either Guihaia is not actually dioecious or one of the plants in my clump has gone hermaphrodite.
