Last month I was in Massachusetts and Maine for a few weeks on vacation.  While in Massachusetts, we took a trip into downtown Boston.  To my surprise, look what was found in the Boston Public Gardens!

Nice photos Larry! Looks like the nurseries up there have a great selection of summer annuals! I know prices have come down a lot recently on Xmas and foxtails, but really...

Fastfeat-

I am going to guess that these are all potplanted, or are otherwise dug up in fall.

All those palms/plants would be real ugly by late October!

Global warming has really expanded the range of some palms. LOL

I love the look.  Would be best if they were just pots stuck in the ground, but you know we all would be doing the same thing if we were forced to live there.

At the Missouri Botanical Gardens last summer they had two triangle palms (~15 feet tall with trunk) planted outside the tropical greenhouse.  I didn't expect that.

In Washington, the Key West Tropical Forest and Botanical Garden has a display at the US Botanic Garden.  I suspect it's all native Keys plants!

Cool!  I was in Chicago a few years back and they had Bismarkia'sf and P roebellinis planted outdoors.  Great summer annuals!

I think it also speaks a great deal about the interest and support for palms in outdoor landscapes.

My guess as well that if you dug a couple of inches below the surface you would reach a pot.  Otherwise someone didn't do their homework before planting them and that someone's boss is going to be mad by mid Fall.

Larry,

Did I ever mention the time I took a nap in the Boston Common?  I got off the T and felt really tired.  I proceeded to take a nice 1/2 hour long nap like the sterno bums in the area.  Bean town is a great place.

These types of plants are pretty much impossible to find in New England, so I would suspect someone made a concerted effort to get them and (pot) plant them.  I am sure that the Boston Public Garden must have a remote greenhouse somewhere for overwintering certain plants.

Guys,

it's the same thing as here in NY - although we're not nearly as cold as boston, but huge tropicals have taken off here like crazy... I'm starting to realize that I'm not the only one... I've been seeing palms planted all over the place.... I need to start taking some pics...  Although I've yet to see anyone with palms as big as my 24ft queen up here...

Hey, Larry... btw.. Tarpon is an AWESOME town.... We spent a whole day down there a few weeks ago...

I wish I knew you were in town!

I too love it here as Tarpon Springs still is a bit "quaint".

You will also see outdoor planted tropicals and palm trees in Kansas City.    at restaurants, in front of banks, shopping centers, apartments complexes, etc.   They are dug up before winter and stored somewhere (mosty likely a greenhouse) and planted again next springtime.

Kent in Kansas.

Gowing palm trees in the middle of the country - Kansas.

It's hot in the summer (usually) and cold in the winter (always).

Yeah, Larry.... I was in tampa for a week looking around at houses. I thought about you when we drove up there, but didn't have your number on me.. It was during the day and I figured you were probably working anyway.... Next time we come down, hopefully we can meet...

Such things can always be ignroed for a day or two  :D

Next time you come down, be sure to look me up.  With your palm obsession, I can show the best parts of town :P
