One pot. 3 palms. One dead.

BN6o50W.jpgJust bought a house and the previous owner gifted me with 5 potted palms. I spent all winter hauling them inside. I have one pot with multiple palms.  In one pot one of the four has decided to die. The roots are very close to one another. How do I remove one without damaging the others? Oh and could you tell me which palm this is?

Those are Phoenix roebelenii (Pygmy Date Palms), they could probably use a slightly larger pot. As for your dead one, cut its trunk back to the soil, thats pretty much all you can do.

Are you certain the one is totally dead? It may have just lost it's fronds or something.

But I'd be concerned if one just died all of a sudden since it could be bacteria or another disease which may kill the rest of them.

Do you have any pics of the dead trunk?

I have found with really root bound multiple palms. If the palms aren't getting enough nutrients the weakest palm may bite the dust. Survival of the fittest and a small potted world =/ By the way welcome to PT @ABWright
