Like it says, I was doing some raking and heard a snap, and noticed that I beheaded my Chamaedorea ernesti-augustii.  And yes, it was below the meristem, as far as I can tell.  will this branch from the base, or from lower leaf axils, or is it a goner?  No leaves are left on it; it's just an eight inch twig!

Thanks,

Bruce

So sad.  It was C. ernesti-augustii though, not metallica.  Is it just as miuch a goner?

Since they are single stemmed, sorry to say that your C. ernesti-augusti is no more.

Yep, the stem will live for years with no leaves.

Talk about evolutionary mistakes!  If a plant can't regrow from the stem, it only takes one bite from an herbivore to make it no more.  Well I guess I have to get more the next time Floribunda offers them.  It is a beautiful palm for understory  and survives will in Sacramento with a canopy.

Yeah Jim, Chamaedoreas are weird that way. As long as the stem produces chlorophyll they'll keep going like the Energizer bunny.
