Germinating Jubaeaopsis caffra

Giving this a try.  It's the same way I germinate Jubaea chilensis.   Dry seeds until they rattle, crack in vise and remove shell, place on slightly damp sterile medium with embryo down.   Second photo, Jubaeaopsis caffra seed on bottom left.

Will they still germinate with the shell or should they always be cracked like your method?

They germinate just fine with the shells on,  however,  Jubaea seeds can take several years that way.  Cracking them speeds it up.  Out of 100 Jubaea seeds, a handful germinated in two weeks, but most within three months.  The verdict is still out on the caffra because I've never germinated those and I only have a small sample size of five seeds.

Do you soak the embryo at all after cracking it open or do you just go directly to the moist medium?

I had 7 of 10 jubaeopsis caffra seed germinate using the baggie method.

So you just put them in with the shell and they germinated?

What was the timeline? What was the medium? Vermiculite/perlite?

I put them in a one gal ziplock bag (w/ the shell on) and mixed 1/4 potting soil to 3/4 perlite w/ just enough water to moisten the medium.  Placed on my kitchen window sill & they sprouted after 60 days-

No, thanks for checking in.  Mine all molded.  Apparently what works well for Jubaea chilensis, does not work for this species.  I do not recommend.

Tried for the first time to germinate Butia catarinensis seeds in a ziplock bag and they molded in a couple weeks...washed them off and put them in a pot and a squirrel ate every single one...that’s with gravel topping off the pot but maybe rocks are in order...hopefully the damn squirrel buried one or two and I’ll see it pop up next spring...somewhere, by pure chance...but I don’t think that will happen...I’ll stick to Sabal minor seeds...they’re much easier.
