Borassus flabellifer shows its Colors

Featured Replies

About a week ago we trimmed some of the lower fronds off our largest Borassus flabellifer to make room to place newly potted voodoo lily bulbs (genus Amorphophallus) and to show off the vibrant colors and black highlights of the palm's trunk. I grew this palm and its sibling from seeds sent to me by Kris in India in 2008 - love and thanks to you, Kris!

Palms of Victory I shall wear

Cape Coral (It's Just Paradise)

Zone 10A on the Isabelle Canal
Elevation: 15 feet

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

That awesome yellow-orange older petioles is the only reason why I crossed Aethiopum off my list.  The green/yellow/orange/black contrast is really cool!  I've run out of space for big diameter palms, so I've become a bit more picky on acquisitions for my nursery area.  Otherwise I would have snapped up a couple of your really nice Aethiopum pots!  :)  Any Flabellifer seedlings on the way?

Thanks. But you didn't get aethiopum from me - I've never tried it. Got no flabellifer seedlings either.

Such a beautiful palm. There is a good episode of mark wiens eating borassus.

Wow! Very nice Meg.

I dunno if this gets said enough, but the contrast of your mulch with your gorgeous jungle is so refreshing @PalmatierMeg

interestingly, I remember Rod Andersons flabellifer had no orange in his Arizona garden but his Aethiopum did have plenty of orange.  Could it be that climate adaptation is the cause of this color?  My aethiopum in florida had no orange either, it had lots of black, but Rods Aethiopum in AZ looked a lot like petioles on Megs palm.  I did notice that the Aethiopum is a lighter green  leaves in both places

Gorgeous palm Meg!  Thanks for the pic!

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??
