You don't have to worry about over pruning palms here because no one prunes them at all. Fortunately when I do see pruned palms here they don't over do it like that. What a horrible thing to do to a healthy palm.

Id have to say, probably the ugliest hurricane cut palm is a Butia. Butias look good with full crowns, when they are only left with a few fronds it looks terrible. Second on the list of ugliest hurricane cut palms is Sabal palmetto, it takes them too long to refill their crowns, looks horrible year round. Of course third is a hurricane cut Washingtonia, although they can row their crowns back within a few months and look normal again by the end of summer. The bottom line is, all palms look terrible with a hurricane cut, but some look *extra* terrible when hurricane cut :)

I have an idea as to why although I am not a fan at all of doing this to any palm.  People over trim because it is expensive to pay a landscaper to trim what looks like 7 Robusta’s.  Trim down to nothing and you don’t have to do it very often.  They grow like weeds in Arizona also.  Most likely the home owner didn’t plant those Palms and views the more as work then beauty.  I have 3 tall Robusta’s in my backyard that are a pain to have trimmed. If I don’t time the trimming perfectly it will drop seeds all over my yard and my grass will have thousands of volunteers growing out of it. Volunteers growing out of rocks, crack, anywhere they can root. So I guess if there is one palm to over trim it has to be this one.

Most were actually ancient fat filiferas, but there were also some canaries in the mix.I couldn't get all of them in the picture. Probably was a cost thing, and opted for the 2 year trim plan...:laugh2:

Most people who cut back there palms that far back is to prolong tree trimming service. Standard procedure in the OC in most commercial landscapes especially for Robusta =/ It's gawd awful

Because they have nothing better to do and they are a******s ?

Probably an asshole property manager wanted them trimmed like that. If that is a recent trim job they will have to trim in a few months to remove seed pods to they will really look like hell !!!

Years ago, before I started growing palms, my plane landed in Phoenix en route to the west coast and I asked someone, "I wonder what kind of palms those are?"  "I think they have them in Las Vegas too"

This is probably OK in front of the Playboy Mansion, but even then, you’re supposed to leave a few leaves on each...
