What do you think about hardy palm and subtropical board?

I personally think the interface is horrible, I have to click a button and see each response 1 by 1.

Nothing to say here.

Works exactly the same as “Discussing Palm Trees Worldwide” for me. Maybe I don’t understand your question.

OP is referring to another forum entirely: https://members3.boardhost.com/HardyPalm/

I've lurked on there from time time over the past 10 years and the board really began to stagnate about 5 years ago (there was some drama involved iirc). Nowadays there's just not much activity at all (especially compared to palmtalk). The archive has been down for a long time which is a shame because there is definitely some great content.

On the topic of plant boards, anyone remember Jungle Forum/Tropicsphere? Now that was a goldmine for plant geeks; wish there was a way to recover/archive it somehow.

How about Reddit? The nature of such an aggregation engine allows it to be far livelier than any forum this day and age, in terms of discussion -  the only problem is the lack of ability to directly share images (you have to host on an alternative site like Imgur).

I'm active on a few subs and my overall opinion of reddit is that it's great for casual discussion but is absolutely horrible for anything beyond that. There are a few interesting discussions every now and then but the gems are buried under mountains of repetitive, recycled, vapid, self-glorifying, self-validation, troll baiting etc type content. The anonymity and the ease of making throwaway accounts also encourages trolling and a toxic upvote/downvote system. So sure it's "livelier" but not in a good way imo, maybe a tiny step up from IG and FB.

Yeah, FB is a total no go, it's pretty much obsolete as far as I'm concerned (apart from some FB Groups, as well as business based features like Ads or Marketplace) - I much prefer IG as the visual based curation does well in facilitating dedicated content interests (although it isn't too good for deep, technical discussion).  TikTok is an annoyance, while YouTube seems like its more for grander projects. Don't care much for Pintrest, SnapChat, Twitter, Tumblr, etc

Now, as far as Reddit, which subs are you active on? My impression was that the repetitive, toxic, trolling-type posts were more common on the general popular subs, whereas more specific subs like r/tropicalweather had more interesting technical discussion, without much of the nonsense.

Yes, IG is great for purely visual content and the light chat.

On reddit, once you get too niche much of the "liveliness" goes away. I checked the sub you mentioned and it looks to be averaging 1-2 posts a day, doesn't seem to be very active. I dabble in the subject a bit and places like storm2k seem like better places to discuss the topic.

I'm on r/coffee (500k members) a lot and while the mods do a good job of keeping a baseline of "substantial content", there's still a lot of people who don't bother to use the search function and in the same vein there is a lot of "the blind leading the blind". A lot of subs have this problem of not being able to retain veteran members (who probably tire of the repetitive content) and instead move from one batch of "noobs" to the next.

So it seems either a sub is too small and not "lively" enough or too big and stuff is ultimately lost in all of the noise.

At the HP&SB, the moderators don't answer requests for posting access. So new folks can't get on. The old experts no longer post. A big problem I've seen on boards us that guys decide to plant something way out of zone, then fish fo approbation. If you tell someone his palm is declining after each winter, you'll be ignored.

I recall RLR getting talked over by newbies. That's what turned me off.

No, it's just that I have to click a link for every reply to the forum, also it still looks the same as it did in 2000.

I wish I could archive the pre 2006 palmtalk forums. Maybe someone should put them on the lost media wiki.

Maybe I should've put this in the off topic forum two months ago.

Jungle forum might work on the wayback machine.
