Why do people complain about Sabal minor being too slow?

Featured Replies

I am growing hundred's of Sabal Minors all still Seedlings and I'm actually pretty amazed that they're growing much faster than what people say they grow, I have seedlings that are a year old already on their third strap and then my older McCurtain which is two years old and on strap #7.  I personally think they grow pretty fast compared to some other palms I have grown from seed.

The list of potential sentences beginning with "Why do people..." is a long one indeed.

Put three in the ground from seed this summer...can’t wait to see if they make it...they won’t get any protection at all...very small...this one is under my Trachy in a southern exposure so I think it’ll do ok...

Sabal minor comes in a myriad of varieties from giant to what I call "uber dwarf". You can populate your yard with the many varieties of this species

Sabal minor 'Blountstown Dwarf' reaches 12-18" tall x 30" wide

Mine's not a dwarf, it's just Oregon grown.  We don't get hot enough here for long enough.  It's dormant for 9-10 months of the year.

I think it depends on what variety.  McCurtain grows pretty slow but the unnamed one I have isn't bad at all.

I found the same with mine, considering it’s been growing in less than ideal summer climate (in uk) but pleased with its growth so far - older than yours - in its second year but still very happy
