I'm on a posting rampage this last couple days.

Anyways - is this a real taxon?  Curious the PalmTalk community perspective.

The important question now is - how do I acquire one?  LOL!

I haven't found any for sale, so either:

  1. Wait for RPS to list them
  2. Fly to Cape Verde to collect in habitat (or pay someone to do the same)
  3. Go through the photos here on Palmpedia and hope someone who took photos collected and is willing to share: https://www.palmpedia.net/wiki/Phoenix_atlantica

Wish I had better news, but @Si never got a reply on his thread 2 years ago: https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?/topic/55850-phoenix-atlantica-and-paludosa-seedlings-wanted/

P atlantica  seeds and plants may not be so rare as supposed. This plant may spread also to African coast beyond the Cabo Verde islands. The continental branch is called P atlantica var maroccana.  Many argue that latter is only a cultivar of dactylifera, but based on my own experience from their cultivation, they fall both with regard to habit and growth closer to theophrasti, that is a wild relative of dactylifera, than to the widespread dacty varieties.

First one shows eophylls of var maroccana (left) and theophrasti (right). Both are quite narrow but former is a tone darker green than latter.

Second picture shows eophylls of var maroccana (left) and dactylifera (right).  Dactylifera eophyll is broader and lighter green and same in color with theophrasti.

Could you try and ship one of these across the pond? PM me if you can.

@Phoenikakias Thank you for sharing the photos and describing the differences.  An interesting Phoenix for sure!
