What is a protective canopy?

I was wondering what is a protective canopy I always hear about it making palms more hardy. Thanks

Anything that shelters palms from above. Could be natural such as taller trees (live oaks, pine trees, etc) or a man made structure like a pergola. The goal is normally to keep frost off of tender palms but it could also help keep water out of the crown and/or provide shade.

wouldent it stop sunlight though?

It could, yes. It all depends on how the structure is designed

I have noticed with my tree ferns that a "protective canopy" even if its

just a roof line can give 3-5F protection on a still night.
