Sabal minor seed stalk question

Recommended Posts

Posted

My oldest sabal minor put out flower stalks for the first time.  Most seeds are now black so it's time to harvest.  My question is, do I cut the stalks off (there are three) or do I leave them alone for the winter? (zone 7a MD)

Thanks

You can cut them off.  They will now wither and dry up.  They have served their purpose..

The mockingbirds love to feast on the seeds all winter long so I usually leave some for them. The rest I cut off and put in a nursery pot or bushel basket and leave outside till spring so they don't get dried out indoors.
