I would suggest visiting Pungo Palms. It is in the Va Beach area. Since you are just starting out on palms they will give you loads of information on palms.

I believe Plant Delights nursery has both of those, you can order from them online. If you're ever down in NC I would recommend checking out Gary's Nursery in New Bern as well.

I started a handful from seed in 2007.  The largest is  8 or 9 feet in overall height and is probably considered just starting to trunk.  The smallest is still less than knee high and looks like a wispy minor.  The biggest one was planted in an ideal location with moisture and sun.  The smallest are ones that I planted out in the dry deep shade in the wooded part of the yard as an experiment.

This is the largest seed grown that one got a little crunched by falling limbs in this past hurricane.   This size is probably about what you can expect out of a seed grown palmetto (planted in a good location) after 13 years.  Still has at least another 13 years to go before anybody is sitting under it...

Those look great! This past summer when I went to Gary's Nursery in New Bern, Mr. Hollar showed me one of his palmettos which he planted 35 years ago, and it's now probably around 35-40 feet tall. He told me it grew very slowly at first, but once it developed a trunk it started putting out about a foot of trunk per year. Hopefully that means yours will start to speed up a little soon

This one is about 8 years grown from seed. It stay about 3 years to long in a 3 gallon pot. I planted it in spring of 2019 & this year it seems to be picking up speed. I suggest growing them to a nice 1 gallon size before putting them in the ground. Don't wait to long like i did ;)

Agreed.

Below is one started from seed in Feb 2017.  It has gone palmate, and has roots coming out the bottom of the deep pot.   Time to go in the ground.

I think that pot slowed it down if the roots are that far out for that amount of time it wont grow how long has it been like that? and congrats on the palmate leaf

Exactly!  It has only had roots hanging out of the bottom of the pot for a month or two, but that is showing me that it is time to get it into the ground.

Some palms don't seem to mind being pot bound, while others (like this Sabal) need to get in the ground to really establish.   BUT, growing them in pots as seedlings you can give them the optimal water, light, fert, temp, etc... So it is a fine balance of babying them in pots when they are small to get good growth and survival, and then planting them out when they are ready.

However, keeping it in a pot will not kill it (at least I don't think so), it will just slow it's growth way down.  I gave a family member a seedling palmetto (same batch as the 2007 ones above).  It was kept as a stunted houseplant for years... She gave it back to me a couple years ago and it looked just like the one above.   I planted it in the ground, it has taken off and appears to be growing just fine now.  They are pretty tough.

~25 bucks for 16 deep tree pots and the tray to hold them.

The pots and trays are strudy enough that I have re-used them a few times.  Also the trays are a gamechanger at keeping my container ranch of seedlings orgainzed and easy to move.

I don't miss the dozens of loose pots and solo cups all over the place...

They have amazing reviews I might try these for my new batch next year. I like organization when I started everything was all over the place. The communal pot was on one side of the deck. The solo pots(milk cartons) were cluttered by the door. The real pots were in between the milk cartons it was messy until one day I lined them all up nicely but they didn't match it was kind of ugly so I planted the extra ones that didn't fit in the garage or deck in the ground near the fig tree.
