Will green sabal birmingham seeds sprout?

Hi all,

I collected a bunch of sabal birmingham seeds yesterday. They are all green but were already falling off the tree and the ones I pulled came off with almost no resistence. They're soaking in water now. About half sank to the bottom and the other half are floating at the top. Is there any chance these might germinate or should I throw the bunch out and try again next month when the seeds are black, assuming there are any left.

They probably won't germinate, but it won't hurt to try.  You can always go back in a few weeks and collect ripe fruits.  Did the seeds themselves look normal (dark shiny brown color and rock-hard) and just the fruits were green or were the seeds whitish color and somewhat soft?  I've germinated not-quite-ripe Sabal mexicana seeds before but the fruits were somewhat yellowish in color and the seeds looked normal.  This past August I tried to germinate a seed from a green fruit I pulled off the tree (with resistance) to test out your very question and it did not germinate.  The seed was whitish color as I described above and it sank in water but was not far enough along to germinate.

That depends on how green they are. Did they turn black a few days after removing it from the tree?

They haven't turned black yet but I did just collect them the day before yesterday. I pulled the fruit off a few and the seeds are still white inside. They're firm, but white. I haven't done that for all of them though. And you're right, it doesn't hurt to try and germinate them. I'm just hoping something actually comes from them. They were falling off the tree so freely. I'm not sure there will be any left by the time they turn black. A few of the seeds beyond my reach were black.

The sabal seeds I germinated had dried and turned black.

I usually wait until mine are black . I realize your seeds were falling off already .

I can't help but only  say I get them when black .

I wouldn't throw them out but try to germinate them and see what happens ?
