Phoenix Theophrasti, Vai beach, Crete

Few days ago I went for a short vacation on Crete, Greece and as passionate palm lover Vai beach was a "must see" to check Phoenix Theophrasti in habitat. It's one of few rare palm reservates left on the island.

I also collected some seeds from beautiful "red petiole" form and will probably offer some for trade in few days. PM if anyone is interested and has some seeds for trade ☺️

Did everyone of those Cluster? I purchased what I thought was one from Jungle music 15 years ago. It’s nice and looks like them, but has never suckered. It’s not like quite like anything I have ever seen in USA.

Many thanks for sharing these beautiful photos!

We have visited Crete about 8 or 9 times and each time we spent a day in Prevely where is another beautiful cretan palm forest.

I found a small population in Souda near Plakias and have got some seeds. Most of the seed are eaten by some pest (as usual in Preveli, too), but a dozen of seedlings grows happily here far north from native land.

@Collectorpalms I think most of them does if not all. Any pictures of your?

@Antti unfortunately we didn't have time to visit Preveli, this way we left it for next visit :)

One of the fastest seedlings from collected seeds 😊. Noticable orange traits on petioles.

Looks vicious but I like it. Phoenix palms are some of my favorites even tho theyre all very similar. I wonder how a hybrid between reclinata and theo would turn out 😂
