Naturalizing Trachys

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I was amazed last year when I looked behind one of my female Trachys and saw seedlings and  small plants . I have plenty of Minors volunteering but wasn't expecting little Trachys .

One picture below  is of one   Gardenia flower that is way late  . My Gardenias stopped flowering weeks ago but this one flower finally opened .

Below is my largest naturalized Trachy  dug up last year . I'll plant it out maybe next year . Below that picture is the male  , below that is the female , and below that are pictures of some other seedlings .

Great job! They seem very happy! I

’m slightly envious. Trachycarpus won’t germinate ourtdoors here.

Thanks ,

The Trachy in the last picture ( and in the pot in the first picture )  was the first one I saw and it was  in incredibly deep shade . It seemed like such a perfect little Trachy and totally surprised me . I looked around more and saw others under that Cypress that I had to move branches with my leg to get a camera shot . So all of those Trachys were almost invisible until I went back into that deep shady area and found them .

What a great surprise .

If you ever decide to sell any of those seedlings I’d definitely be interested :greenthumb:

How many did you want ? I'd like  to dig them and  nurse them through a little transplant shock for a short while .

Just one or two of the trachies, but I'd probably buy as many of the s. minor seedlings as you're willing to sell. Do you know what variety they are?

The Trachys are a Taylor Form male and an unknown stiffer fronded  female .

The Minors are NC ecotypes .

I just thought of something and that is that maybe some of those  seedlings  in my pictures are Minors . The thin fronded ones are Trachys ,  but the wider ones might be Minors . You or others  on this board may have thought the same thing but were too nice to point it out .

I'll check tomorrow and try to find out how many I know are Trachys . You can certainly take 20 or more Minors from around the yard . Some of my Minor volunteers are pretty big and would leave a big hole if they were dug in a professional way , but I have a lot of tiny ones . If you wanted some of the bigger ones some soil would be needed to replace what was dug out as a rootball .

We'll discuss it further once I count my Trachys tomorrow .

Oh cool! Did your original minors come from Gary’s Nursery by chance? I know he sells lots of NC ecotypes.

I may be wrong, but I believe this one and the one on the left in the second picture are sabal minors:

It's possible some of the larger fronded seedlings are Sabal Birminghams . There's a palm 30 feet away from that spot . There's a large leaved seedling right under the Birmingham too .
