I've averaged 12F+ the last 10 years and 12F+ for the last 30 years but there have been plenty of single digits during that period .

I protect the trunk only .

I'll try and post a picture .

Thanks

Im in the Greensboro area and I planted three robustas this summer. They’re all pretty small, probably two feet tall. How would you recommend I protect them if and when they need it this winter?

It has 15 feet of clear trunk and puts out 25-20 fronds a season .

I am no fan of Washingtonias. However, at that latitude and location, my hat's off to you.

Nicely done.

How do you protect the trunk? And do these palms completely defoliate in the winter?

When I was in Atlanta in winter 2006, I saw a municipal planting of Washingonia "filabustas" adjacent to an overpass on the east side of downtown.  I don't recall seeing any burn even though it had been to 19F that November.  There were at least eight palms planted and I am sure they lasted a few years, but I highly doubt they would make it any longer than that.
