Mushrooms starting to grow...

I just received some dwarf palmettos (Sabal minor) in the mail, which arrived in cones. I planted them immediately in pots and am storing them in my sun room to avoid some heavy rains at the moment. Just this morning, I noticed some small mushrooms growing in the pots -- is this a problem for the palms? Should I just pluck them out of the ground or do nothing at all? Or, do I need to re-pot immediately?

I did not have time to take pictures as I had to leave for work, but I can certainly add those later.

Thanks,

Tony

Welcome to the forums!

I've had some of these come up in a few of my small pots this year.  You should be able to just pluck the mushrooms out of the pots and toss them.  I've been able to do that with no adverse affects to my seedlings.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!

Hopefully that is the case -- I will pluck them from the pot as soon as I get home today. The humidity is creating perfect conditions for mushrooms, so we'll see if they continue to pop up. My guess is that the potting mix already had these spores, so there isn't much I can do right now. I don't want to disturb the plant as I just transplanted it, so I'll just monitor closely.

Hi Tony, welcome to the forum. I agree with Kinzy, most fungi growing in the soil or pots does no harm to plants.  It usually lives on dead material breaking down lignin, cellulose and other hard to digest stuff to release more nutrient into the soil. Some fungi are symbiotic to roots, it is the minority that cause problems like rot. Still to get rid of it, as well as picking out the mushrooms you could also let the pots dry out a bit more and keep it in brighter light, that will discourage it a bit.

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.

Freshly picked! Added some new top dressing (1/2 inch) just 3 days ago...and here they are!

I think I'll quit growing palms and turn to mushrooms!!:D

Haha marvelous!

Update:
I carefully plucked the few mushrooms that started growing in the pots, and they haven't reappeared. We had rather humid conditions at that time, and I am pleased to let you know that the very first fronds are emerging from the ground.
