Brown tips on Windmills

Featured Replies

Bought a few windmill palms a few weeks ago, (3 gal size) They had a few brown tips on a few fronds.

I planted them the next day.

They doing OK, was just wanted to know, do I cut off the brown tips only, or just leave alone. Buy the way, Im a newbie.

Welcome to the club. Just leave them until the entire frond turns brown. As long as there’s still some green it’s beneficial to the plant to leave them on.

Thank you Jeff, Appreciate your quick response.

I have alot to learn.

My next question will be concerning the best fertilizer.  The palms are planted on a small slop, Was wondering what to use as fertilizer,  Stakes or granule type.

Is 8-2-12 what I want. Again, thanks so much

The easy answer is palm gain. I believe that’s what most of us use. If you’re really serious you could have a soil analysis done to determine what nutrients your soil needs for the perfect balance, but I’d start with just using palm gain and if later you see signs of a deficiency then consider the soil analysis. Carl Pool palm fertilizer also has a good reputation.

Thanks again Jeff, This forum is just what I needed.

Yes very serious about palms.

Picking up 2 pindos this week.

They're a little stretched out so probably grown in shadier conditions than what yours are now in.  You may see some more browning as they get adjusted to the extra sun.

The new fronds will probably come in with shorter petioles and I would also expect each finger on the leaves to come in thicker.  The fronds you have now are pretty skinny.

Here's a video I shot that hopefully outlines clearly what you can expect.
