Can someone help me identify this Areca palm? I got it from a buddy of mine at his nursery. He was selling it for $660 and he just gave it to me for free. I guess it was from seed collected in San Diego.  Whatever it is I love it. Thank you everyone for your help.

Ok thank you. I didn't think it was worth that much either. How tall will it get and how can I best care for it as an indoor plant?

I have several.  Keep in shade and water every two days.  They like moist soil.  That palm in a 3 gallon would be $35 in South Florida.  Good luck with the palm.  You will enjoy it.

I have some in GH now, waiting to be potted up.

Yeah that would be some great friend to hand you $600 LOL. Plant pricing is pretty random though. I could buy that for around $20 here in Florida but maybe not out there. It could be $100. I don’t know. I have seen some crazy pricing posted on here. As far as yours goes, it looks like a 3-4 year old Areca in a 4” pot. It could stay in that for a year or more without repotting. They are not fast growing and do not tolerate cool conditions so if you are in Oregon, it would be mostly an indoor plant. Bright light is ok but not direct sun for best results. It actually looks well grown so far so if you can simulate the conditions it was in at the nursery, you should be fine. These do tend to sucker so if you see that occurring don’t worry. Misting would be a good idea if your climate is dry. Good luck with your plant. It is a very desirable palm and certainly a nice gift.

Ok thank you. I will mist it once a day. It is a beautiful palm. Is it ok at room temperature?

Wow those are beautiful palms. How easy are they to germinate?

660? Wow.

It is a nice palm!

They're selling 5g J. Chilensis on ebay for 370 bucks....

Now those are worth it for 7a+ climates.

5 year high 42.2C/108F (07/06/2018)--5 year low 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)--Lowest recent/current winter: 4.6C/40.3F (1/19/2023)

Yes I dont think he know what they were or the value. I need to buy a jubaea. They are amazing palms and fully hardy here in zone 8b.

Unless you like extremes in temperatures, room temperature is ok. I would keep it away from air conditioner vents.

Would they prefer 80 degrees? Also I will keep it away from air vents

Is a west facing window too intense for it?

Value depends on where you are growing palms. I hesitate to say it, but... so many germinate under my 35 A. vestiaria along a path that I am forced to rip the seedlings out of the ground. Not what you wanted to hear, I get that, and I apologize for such a rude statement, but it's all about location. People who can grow this palm in zones 9a -9b or indoors are gifted growers. I hope the palm will do well for you! It's a beauty!
