We sold our FL house in the spring of 2018, and we’ve been stuck in a rental since before then. I couldn’t plant anything, and so I gave up on dreaming of my perfect tropical garden. Today we closed on a new house in Cairns’ northern beaches, so we went out and bought a bunch of plants! The yard is small, but I’m hoping to get some enjoyment out of it.

    You’re probably right. The developer put it in on my request, and I’d asked for this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Licuala_ramsayi
     

    but perhaps he just planted a more commercially available species instead.

    I'm not convinced I am right. Do you think it is Spinosa? It could be a small Ramsayi going up to get bigger. Seems to be in a sunny spot for licuala and the color is a bit pale from what licuala I've seen. I wonder if is a special lighter variety. Is it doing well? Seems to be doing well as far as I can tell.

    Spinosa does better in full sun I think. Yes, and it's lighter. Makes sense now.

    I have a spinosa in full sun ( and as is my usual trick, the spiky fronds encroach on a walking path.... sigh ). Are there wicked spikes on the frond stems of the one pictured ?. Could be a young ramsayi otherwise, that is not too happy with the lack of shade

    It’s not doing great. It was a deeper green when they first planted it.
