I see “dry coconuts” at the supermarket which I found to be coconuts with the “juices drained. Do these have any worth germinating?

No water inside: very difficult.  Not impossible though.  Better to get ones with water in them.

Make sure they're mature. Not ones labeled "young coco" .

They were pretty small for my expectations, though I'm aware it could be a dwarf variety. Perhaps Malayan. They were from Guyana. I'll give it a try anyways and try to find a supermarket that sells the "real thing" ^_^.

The coco i recently germinated is from Guyana, plenty of water inside though. Also a smaller size coconut, but that's all they had at Publix.

Ha, that's exactly the store I bought from! It was a smaller one, probably a dwarf varient. I couldn't find any that had water.

Here the coconut taken out of the bag and placed in a little flower pot. Root development has been fairly slow but i can see one coming.

Im starting to get the feeling that i need to go ahead and pot this coco up and let roots grow in the soil. Everything was going at a semi-decent pace until the other day and it has just really slowed down. Think its being picky?

@CodyORB i have no understanding of what you mean by that. I just need to know if it needs something else to help it along. Maybe it will continue growing soon ^_^

Whoops! I meant it more as a joke. Coconuts grow best in soil. :D

To reword it, where in the wild would you find coconuts growing in a ceramic pot or plastic bag? :P

Hi Cody,

No, they are trash!  Coconuts need to have at least some water in them to germinate.  The sprouts feed off the nutrients in the coconut water for about the first 8 months or so till they have enough roots developed.  I have never heard of a dry coconut germinating.

I have good news for you all, I shook the coconut and I actually heard and felt a bit of water "swishing" around! It's in the yard now, we'll see what happens!

@CodyORB Any progress?

My coco seems to have stalled again. Its not moved much, maybe its focusing on root development or the soil is too mucky. Im going to see about changing out the soil for something that maybe wont be as mucky. Sand mixed with some of its current soil? The current soil its in is the Miracle Grow Palm/Cactus/Citrus. It shouldnt be too hard to find some sand somewhere lol

No, at least that I know of. I have it 1/2 buried outside in the ground (where the climate here has been ideal lately for outdoor germination). It may have sent out something in the dirt but I won't dig it up.
