Hi everyone. I'm new to Christmas palms and I've had two for about a month now. They have developed these spots. A few of the lower leaves have turned a little yellow also.  I don't know what they are or really how to treat for it if it's even needed. I did give a dose of magnesium a few days ago because I didn't think it would hurt anyway. Anyone know what this is? Thanks.

Hi Aqua, welcome to the forum. Sorry I can't help with that. Hopefully a local can. It does look like a deficiency to me but I don't know what.

There is a fungus that can do it too I think. Don't cut it off until it is completely dead though, they recycle some nutrients from dying leaves to new ones.

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.

Thanks for advice.  I should have introduced myself first... so hello everyone.

I did spray some magnesium on the fonds and they look a little better so far. I already cut off the brown fond. I'll know better next time.  Both are in a 27" pot together and making a new fond. Hopefully the new growth will be OK.

Wowza a 27 inch pot?? How old are these palms? Do you have a pictures of the full palms from farther away? My initial thought is way too much moisture is hanging around in that unused soil if they are too young for that size pot..

Those spots are a common fungus on younger Christmas Palms, probably introduced by being shoved together in a nursery causeing low airflow while all being watered overhead.. If you spray it with a copper fungicide it would stop it from spreading but the affected fronds will not "heal" back to normal so to say.

Thanks for the reply palmx.  Yeah 27"  concrete container. My thinking was with two I wouldn't have to transplant. They are about 3 1/2 ft tall, maybe 3 years old?. We have been getting a lot of rain lately in the afternoons and I've felt of the soil often, it isn't soggy but definitely stayed damp, but in full sun.
