Thought I had some pindo-pupping going on. The bigger one was a discarded seed I ate from a golf resort on a trip to La Joya. Couldn't resist...but i tossed it in a pot with another palm and two years later it sprouted.

I separated and reported mom and her "pup" and found a seed attached. I guess that one took about 3 1/2 yes to sprout!  What a nice surprise. Butia don't pup. I know dactylifera do. Any others?

If I'm understanding your post correctly you planted 2 seeds and they germinated 1½ years apart?  Or was it two palms from the same seed?  The reason I ask is that there are usually 2-4 "seeds" within the round hard shell found in the Butia fruit.

You are correct that Butia don't produce pups or suckers.  There are dozens of palms that do but among those that are also cold hardy I will mention some.  Besides Phoenix dactylifera that you mentioned, Phoenix reclinata, Phoenix theophrasti, Phoenix loureiroi, Chamaedorea microspadix, Chamaedorea cataractum, Nannorrhops ritchieana, Serenoa repens, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Acoelorraphe wrightii, Arenga ryukyuensis, Arenga engleri, Rhapis excelsa, Rhapis humilis and Chamaerops humilis come to mind.

Hmmm, so maybe that second germinator can out of the same seed, the bigger one might have detached, so it just LOOKED like it it had its own seed. They were mighty close together. Yes, I'm estimating the emergence of #2 at 1 1/2 year later.

Thanks, Fusca.
