So i have a new palm added to my mini collection, a foxtail! I found it at Walmart for 14.97, couldnt pass it up. I know it doesnt take frost well, and i do not plan to plant it, but what are some suggestions to put it in the ground while in the pot? I hope they are not like bismarck palms!

I am repotting this dude soon. Roots are growing out of the bottom. It is from Costa Farms in Miami, FL. It did have what looked like a spidermite on it but i have taken care of that. I have noticed what looks like ants all over it, i used a natural insecticide on it but they are still crawling. Same thing happened to one of my queen palms and my tangarine tree. Took about two days of this insecticide to kill them all. Im about to make more tonight so i can apply again tomorrow. Other than that i am starting to acclimate it to the sun, it was likely shadehouse grown so i am doing a little morning sun for now.

Foxtails are gorgeous palms, and in-scale for the average homeowner where a Royal might overwhelm. I was working in a nursery in Fort Lauderdale years ago when their well-deserved popularity skyrocketed; they were by far our biggest mover. Wouldn't it be nice to see them hybridized for a zone or two of cold hardiness?

I love foxtails so much! I would like to have a royal, if Walmart has it then ill get it. I doubt they do though. Would be great if they were cold hardy palms!

I have 2 Foxtails in pots.  I too am in a No-Grow zone.  They tolerate my heat, and some TX sun,  and do well if kept watered.  My advantage is that I have a heated greenhouse they go into during winter.  One is about 2 ft and the other is about 9 ft.  Just cant resist either.  Best of luck JLM

Thanks! I will have to bring them inside during winter with light through the window. Hopefully i will be able to put it outside on warmer days for some sun. I did find looking through the holes in the pot, something has covered some roots and soil in eggs. I didnt get a good look at it, but when i repot should i just cut them off? I suspect ants, but i will see what i find when i repot.

That massive spear is starting to open finally. Another spear coming in at a decent pace right behind it!
