I have shared these pictures in a few places so you may of seen them already but I’m just so pleased with their progress from seed! Quite a few people seem to be getting these going from seed now, so hopefully one day they may be slightly more common place in certain parts of the world.

My largest plant. Growing point is higher and seems to be forming a small trunk

Hi Plantasexoticas, How are your young Juania doing now? Happy to get some news and pics. Mines are smaller but it sounds that they were happy with our wet summer this year.

They are doing well! Happy on my balcony in most conditions- still slightly scared of leaving them out in any severe cold especially in pots, but they take cold and light frosts well.

Hi Mate, Would you be looking to sell any of your JA seedlings?

Hi,

Yeah I’ve certainly never ruled it out. I’m just happy keeping hold of them until I know for sure they are going to a good home as I’d hate for anything to happen to them after getting them this far given how uncommon they are. That and the right offer too as they were quite an investment at the time I purchased them.

I may be growing some more, but will have to see if I have similar success next time round

Hi James :)

Hope you enjoyed a nice weekend. Thanks for the update, I'm building a Palm garden, particularly for rare palms and pushing zones for palms such as Queens and King Palms.

Your welcome to pop over if you have time one evening or over a weekend.

Juania Australis has the potential to do great in the UK and it would be great if many of us grow them to ensure they no longer endangered as a species.

I'm also growing some from seed. What would be the right offer for one of your seedlings?

Cheers,

Jim

Good luck with that one, Jim. I have already tried to proposition him, a number of months back actually, for one of those fantastic looking Juania’s. He’s done a fantastic job with them and I can see why James is reluctant to let go of them now. You may be waiting a while yet, assuming he does actually sell any. It’s obviously not about the money, but the time and dedication he has put into them. I would have a hard time letting them go if it was me. I have just ordered some more seeds myself to try again after my albino Juania seedling died.

Hi Mate,

It's great that we are all passionate about JA, it would be great if it was abundant in the next five years if we continue with the quest.

I have ordered some seeds and so has one of my friends, if I'm successful I am happy for you to have some, the hope and goal is a few of us can successfully grow it.

How many did you manage to germinate from your batch? Do you have a photo of your albino specimen?

Thanks for the kind words,

seems lots more enthusiasts are giving the seeds another go!

One of mine did originally start with the lack of chlorophyll in its first strap leaves but did eventually revert to full green like the others. I think the survival of mine may be due to the fact it was part green still

Hey man, thanks for the offer. Here is a photo of that one I had, which I managed to dig out. As you can see, this one is very albino-like in appearance. From this moment on, it went into a steady state of decline and withered away eventually. I think I just got unlucky as I had 3 Juania seeds in total. 2 of them germinated fine, however one of them died shortly after emerging. The other was the albino specimen that lived for about 3-4 months before dying. Hopefully I have better luck this time around.

As you say, it would be great if we could get some more specimens established around the south of England. There’s no doubt in my mind that they will do very well in London and the south coast, even further inland as evidenced by a few specimens growing outdoors in places such as the midlands near Birmingham. However Juania is just so rare in cultivation that it has been difficult to obtain and get widely established over here. Hopefully we can change that though! :greenthumb:

Regards, Ben

Hi Ben,

Thanks for sharing the photo, it's great to hear we have a common quest. I have heard from many ppl that it's straight forward to germinate them, it's the high probability of them declining as seedlings which is the main issue. What did you learn from your last experience, any major lesson's learnt and do's and don's to share with the folk on here?
