Sabels in Habitat near Mazatlan, Mexico Photos

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I recently went on a motorcycle trip. Along the way somewhere between Nayarit and Mazatlan there was forrests upon forrests packed with these sabels. Are they from habitat or simple just naturlized there? Some places looked sort of like florida with wet, swampy and very flat areas and others more savannah type nature, regardless they grew in both places but a lot better in the drier areas they frankly looked sick in the swamp some places and very yellowed but they still where growing like weeds, too bad i did not take any photos of them. here is some photos. What sabel if it is sabel are they?

Nice, I guess it’s pretty quiet down there right now? You don’t get harassed riding a motorcycle? Or do you do it in a group?

yes it is, most things are shut down in the coastal towns. However there is still tons of trailers on the roads. I have never experienced any harrasment on the road down there and i allways drive alone, no problem. just watch out for oncoming traffic and be ready to drive onto the shoulder just in case some guy is driving past someone in the opposite lane and does not see you. Drive was really beatiful, too bad i did not take more photos.

The Brahea seem to have a flatter palmate leaf, whereas the pics you posted are strongly costapalmate which to me is a strong giveaway for a Sabal of some sort. That's just my view though. I could be wrong.

Was thinking the same thing. iNaturalist lists numerous observations for S. mexicana in that region of Mexico.. That said, have seen plenty of entries where the identification of something was clearly off and hadn't yet been contested, which leaves some room in regards to whether or not that data is 100% correct.

The width of the trunk and the petiole leaf base pattern is an indicator for S. rosei.
