Mine has always grown perfectly no issue with cold or anything else until about a month-and-a-half ago when It got attacked by 11 and 1/2 inch gopher which mauled half the roots away.  So I cut off all the seeds, flower spaths and spent fronds to send energy upwards hopefully it will recover

Underappreciated palm for South Florida. I like growing big multis. They are fast, so you can get interesting pieces quickly.

Mine has just started to pick up after about 6 years.

It is probably at the time when it is as beautiful as it will ever get.

Let's be honest here, most palms (like people) go through several stages in their life.

The 'young and cute' stage, then the 'Blooming' stage, then the 'most attractive' stage, then only some look 'grand' in old age.

It is between a Gaussia maya and a Ropy Baueri. Both in their young and cute stage.

Yes, and too close together, if only I had the foresight and space.

@SoulofthePlace  Are you happy with yours? I don't know your climate is that usual for your area?

Cheers Steve

It is not dead, it is just senescence.

Elegens ( and macarthurii ) are a bit 'weedy' in my yard. They produce thousands of seeds annually and they are a favourite food of some of our native birds and bats who help spread the seeds. They probably hybridise too.... and both suffer from ganoderma wilt in Darwin.

Oh, sorry to hear that mate, cut the buggers down then.

Almost didn't post pictures.

She has looked better.

Usually shows a little cold spotting coming out of Winter...

but the cold event this year torched it.

Hard to get picture of whole tree so here's three.

Your fat cluster looks like mine! Almost identical . .

Had to run out back and be sure it was still there.

I agree, they're wonderful!

P. elegans is one of my favorite palms. It's big enough to be noticed, but never turns into a monster. And, it's very tough and adaptable. I have grown scores, if not hundreds from locally obtained seeds. Even the babies are almost as tough as Chamadorea radicalis, the infamous Mexican Cucaracha Palm.

Here’s the crowns and trunk bases on my cluster. They’re about 15 feet tall now.

A friend gave them to me all clustered in a 10 gallon tu. I could have separated them but I didn’t.

How good are they as potted specimens?

Really good. They sometimes use them in indoor shopping malls here. They will eventually get too tall for the average house, but they're great in the meantime, and they take a long while to get too big indoors.

See my PM!

Here is one of my two 1,5 yo P. elegans seedlings, seeds were collected in botanical garden in Paris. They seem to be doing pretty well indoors even without an artificial light in winter. :)
