Indoor Adonidia setup - feedback?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hey guys, new around here but wanted to share my indoor setup and get any feedback.

I ordered this Christmas Palm online not too long ago. I've been bringing it outside every once in awhile if the weather is nice.

Right now it is inside a greenhouse with a [boil] humidifier to keep the humidity around 70-80 about 12 hours a day.  I have a Black Magic grow light above on a 12 hour timer to supplement a bit of extra light. There's also a small personal fan in there to help circulate air.

I have noticed despite my efforts on humidity, the tips are still turning brown. Could this be from a delayed response to shipping?

I am curious if you guys think it would be better to direct the fan upwards, so it circulates air in the greenhouse better, or if I should leave it facing out the hole of the greenhouses, so it moves old air out and pulls new air in the bottom?

One other question, how is the growth rate on these? I've heard they stay relatively short for awhile as they'e growing out the width of their trunk.

Thanks!

Being an indoor Xmas palm guy myself. I’d like to chime in. I like your setup but be careful with the humidity. Honestly you need a fan going in there so prevent rot. Also with no movement or fresh air I think the palm won’t transpire like it should abs the soil could stay wetter longer. Myself I keep my palm room at 40 percent humidity to prevent mold on the palms and in the room. Also helps to dry the soil out. I get minor brown tipping not a big deal at all if anything I just need to keep on watering. Air movement still important  even with lower humidity.  Last thing I keep the room in the 80s 24/7. Hope that helps a bit but all in all your Palm looks good. Just watch out for bugs

Thanks. Any suggestions on how much airflow is needed?

With the green house open the humidity stays around 55% with the humidifier on. If I close it up and turn the fan on I can keep it around 80%.

The greenhouse is suspended a few inches off the ground as well so that airflow can come in from underneath, I have a personal Vornado fan in there to move air around.

I'm not sure if I should place the fan next to an opening in the plastic so it's pulling old air out,  or if I should place it facing toward the palm so it circulates air around the plant?

Good question. Sometimes I just put air movement in my room and sometimes I aim my fan at the palms. So both. lol. Air movement is a good thing no matter what you do

good luck and make sure you check weekly for spider mites and scale even with high humidity my Adonidias broke out with them
