aztropic
In October 2006,the IPS sponsored a trip to the Dominican Republic to view native palms in situ.Fast forward 14 years for another peek at this specific, spectacular, very remote area, occupied by Pseudophoenix ekmanii. Then,a group of around 200 people were rotated by helicopter into habitat to view this exceptionally beautiful and rarely seen palm. This time,I made the hike of approximately 5 miles with 1 other palmtalker guided by Leonel Mera into the forest for a few more pictures.Enjoy! aztropic Mesa,Arizona 6 2 Mesa, Arizona Temps between 29F and 115F each year
aztropic
We did have some help available for this hike,'just in case.(notice the handmade saddles crafted from palm fronds and old feed bags). This is an extremely remote area and the terrain is mostly 'dog tooth' limestone, which would cut to the bone if you fell on it.Every step has to be deliberate and calculated... aztropic Mesa,Arizona 5 1 Mesa, Arizona Temps between 29F and 115F each year

Firepalm
Great habitat shots of an exceptional and unique species. I agree with Steve that these have always reminded me of giant white carrots sticking out of the ground. Also interesting that with a casual glance they share a lot of visual characteristics that remind me a bit of dypsis decipiens.
