My older Chambeyronia sp 'Houailou' puts out new leaves that are salmon colored. Today I found this dark crimson leaf wonder on my smaller 'Houailou' in the front yard. Enjoy.

    That is a beauty !! I think it's a hookerii though houlaiou usually has bifid fronds at this age. And the petiols are more yellow. Either way it's a great looking palm cheers

    Huh. It was sold to me as Houailou. Shows even"experts" mess up. It stays where it's at. Can't have too many Chambeyronias.

    Thanks, guys. What makes you think it is hookeri and not straight macrocarpa? I've found hookeri much trickier to grow but this guy is doing great except for sunburn last summer.

    I would agree on hookeri.  The crown on the palm is not dark green.  It looks yellow.

    Yes...that is a houailou.  Notice the contrast between the rachis and the leaflets.  The leaflets have a blue hue to them and are narrower than macrocarpa.

    The leaflets are also more rigid and less smooth to the touch on C houailou than C macrocarpa.  Someone else pointed out that when the salmon color fades it get's more of bluish tint, I find the blue tint is similar to that of newly opened leaflets on Kentiopsis oliviformis.

    Suddenly I can see why some have talked about this moving to another genus in addition to being a separate described species! The specific epithet should be "laughland" after Kiwi Bryan Laughland who brought it to the attention of the palm collecting world.

    Just out of interest, how does this one grow in the warmer parts of NZ? Anyone got them going over there? 

    Millbrook, "Kinjarling" Noongar word meaning "Place of Rain", Rainbow Coast, Western Australia 35S. Warm temperate. Csb Koeppen Climate classification. Cool nights all year round.

    Glacial! Needs a lot of heat like Kentiposis oliviformis.   My best one was eaten off by a rat this winter but is pushing a leaf at least.  Bloody thing attacked my KO too.  Maybe the rat knows something!

    definitely is a Chambeyronia and should remain in such genus. I don’t agree that Bryan should be given any credit as the local Palm people already knew about the Houailou palmiers before him.

    what is the difference between Chambeyronia sp. 'Houailou' between Houailou Red Leaf Palm and Chambeyronia macrocarpa Red Leaf Palm?

    No such thing as Houailou red leaf palm unless your talking hookeri, I think RPS call houailouensis “houailou red leaf palm” but it isn’t very accurate a name at all
