I just received 4 young Johannesteijsmannia magnifica, 2 leaves, but they just look the same like my altifrons.  Is there anything different between magnifica and altifrons in color of leaves, the back of the leaves when they are young , can they be identified in this stage or only when they are older?
Are there any available pictures to see the differences if there are when they are small?
I hope you guys can help me out because I am afraid I got scammed

I am not the expert here but if you have pictures that would help immensely!

Agree w/ jimmyt,.. pics would help.  Also, there are a few seedling sized pics over on the species' description on Palmpedia which might help. Hopefully the ones you got are legit.. Incredible palm. Near the top of my list in the future.

I believe they are altifrons because underneath the leaf is just green as on top . I have a Sabinaria Magnifica what is very similar to the J. magnifica and you can also see on the 1st leaf that it is silver underneath. Pictures are hard to make since it is night. I will make pics in the morning.

However whoever has grown a J.magnifica from seed will be able to tell me if the leaves are silver from the beginning. I am pretty sure they are but online nobody made a picture from underneath when they were young. Thank you for replying.

I have few Joey altifrons seedlings about a year old I will go look at them and get a few pics and post them here for our perusal.

Artificial light. but there is no silver or grey tone to them.  Just some light glare. One pic of the smaller seedling is the front side of the leaf.  The bleached band on the larger is a grow light burn. These are about 1 yr old.

JANAIY  see if you could get a daylight pic of the underside of the one in pic #2.  Curious to know if that is coloration or light glare.  Yours are a bit more mature than mine.  They look good though!

Morning, I did my best here. Check it out:

Pic 1 and 2 is 2nd small leave underneath

pic4 as well

pic3 is 1st leave underneath

i asked the nursery who wants to take them back but they have not explained yet what species they actually sent. So I want them first to tell me because they had 9 plants for sale and they have been all sold already.

If you look at the pics of both altifrons and magnifica on Palmpedia, the silvering of the underside occurs on both.  It is more prominent on magnifica and does not seem to appear until they really get some age.  This is a difficult one to tell at this stage......  Any fine hairs on the underside of the leaves?  That is what gives the silver coloring.  May need a magnifying glass to look.

Do you see any hairs on altifrons of yours? I see hairs on the ones I bought.
The nursery said they ordered magnifica and they are supposed to be magnifica. I am confused and don’t know how I should proceed.
I did emailed a few other magnifica owners to see if they have something to join to our research. Thank you so much assisting me. Let’s see how this story ends up.

I did not see "hairs" on mine.  I did look fairly closely last night and I will look again tonight with a light and magnifier.   If you are seeing "hairs" then may you do have magnificas!

Interesting for sure to see how this grows out!

Some pics from underneath of both 10x zoom with iPhone , still difficult to decide

I see a more roughness to see on the ones to be magnifica than my altifrons what appears with no roughness (cleaned both the leaves first

driving me nuts right now

first 2 pics are altifrons, rest are my new ones

last pic appears to have those little dents what I haven’t seen on altifrons

I talked to Steve Stern who has both species and he told me when they are that young it’s difficult to tell the difference. So that’s not helping either. I might just take them to a botanical garden to see what they tell me.
in the meantime the Nursery where I bought them are investigating as well to see if they can figure it out.
I also have a Sabinaria magnifica who shows already on their first leaf the silver color. But again it’s not a Joey palm . Here a pic  from Sabinaria

Some nice magnified pics there. I will check my J altifrons leaves for frog hairs in the am.  You have stirred the Palm Nation! :D

I visited a reputable palm nursery in Homestead, FL few years back.  They had J. magnificas and altifons in up to 5 gal pots, approx. 2 ft tall.  I can tell you, that even with the 5 gal sizes that I would not have known there was a difference between the two at that stage.  I'll look for my photos from that trip and post if I find some good ones.

I took these of the underside of my J. altifrons seedlings.  The surface is slightly rough but I do not see any fine hairs at all.  I would have to agree with piping plovers that the hair development may take a while to develop when it does.

Thank you so much with going with me through this mistero.
Right now I was notified that those are Altifrons and they have been shipped out by mistake. At least now the mystery is solved.
I am still going to find my Magnifica and once I get it I will definitely document it with pics to be able to find the way to identify! It was fun though

What a relief that you now know.  The nursery I visited awhile back was Ex*tic Palms on S.W. 152nd ave, Homestead, FL.  They have a website, you may want to check with them to see if they still have Magnificas.  They were potted in a heavy mix -  too big and heavy to fly /mail back home, otherwise I would have purchased one.  Since you are in South FL you likely have better transport options than I did.  Hope you find one!
